Yale 2015 SCEA Hopefuls

If your essay will be significantly better with 600 words then go with 600 words.

@msqqq1234: Applying either SCEA or RD will not affect your chances- people who apply SCEA are the ones who REALLY want to know early where they stand with Yale and who clearly have Yale as their first choice.

Here is a thread that discusses this:
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/yale-university/1012975-how-much-advantage-does-ea-give-me.html

I thought there is no limit for the common app essay? Mine’s 870 words. I know it’s very long, but it’s a story, it flows well, and there’s really nothing i can cut.

600 words is 20% longer than a 500 word essay. While that might not seem like much, the reader can probably definitely tell you went over the suggested limit. 870 is an over kill dude…

Read some Hemmingway and I promise you that you can cut your essays in at least half.

I’m applying SCEA as well, and am pretty stressed about how behind I am. I’m desperately revising both my essays and I still need to do the extracurricular part of the common app and the short takes. Part of me wants to just switch to RD because I feel like my application will be stronger if I have more time…

There’s no limit for the Common App essay, but Yale does mention that it strongly prefers both the Common App essay and the Supplement essay to be under 500 words. My Common App essay is 566 words and my Supplement is 497 words, so I think I’m good.

If you feel this way, I strongly urge you to apply RD. You shouldn’t be rushing your application just to apply SCEA.

I guess I could cut it down to 560… It just doesn’t seem fair… But then again it’s not fair for the officers either to have to read 500 word+ essays over and over again.

Hey chaps,

My sis and I are wondering who will get into Yale EA… she’s standing right next to me haha and we’re hoping you can help us compare who (if either) have a better chance of getting into Yale. It’s just a friendly competition and we are both in love with UVA and are automatically in to that school already so we are just curious to see how yale would work out for us… so here are our stats!

Me:

Swarthmore

Thanks very much everyone

You would probably have a marginally better chance than your sister, but you both have strong applications

You have a better SAT score, but your sister could make up for that with a great essay. You guys are essentially on the same level.

The night of decisions is going to be an interesting one in your household.

I have a feeling that you would either both get accepted or both get rejected, rather than one getting accepted and the other not.

Did you guys read last year’s stats thread? It’s making me nervous.

^I didn’t. Why?

^ Some amazing people got deferred/rejected, which is expected.

I just clicked submit! I’m kind of relieved. And oddly pumped. Let the wait begin…

I started the common app and my essays only a week ago but I think I’ll still apply SCEA since I’m the type of person who would procrastinate until December 31st if I left it till RD anyway hehe :slight_smile: Well I don’t really expect to get accepted but I just can’t NOT apply SCEA when I CAN.

Getting ready to shorten my 750 word common app, and in the process of writing my supplement essay

@kidfromvirginia

My brother and I are both applying to Yale SCEA as well! and I’m pretty sure you will both get the same results. (i think my brother and I will as well.) There was that article a couple months ago about these quadruplets’ acceptance to Yale, and the dean of admissions EXPLLICITLY said in the article that they prefer NOT to give different decisions to siblings if they have similar stats.

i mean sure I would be happy if my brother got in, but it would suck if he’s the only one who gets in.

@kidfromvirginia
Very interesting! Let us know how that turns out!

Best of luck to both of you :)

I didn’t wrte EA on the mail envelope, but Yale tells us to do so “so they could process the app more quickly”

Do you guys think there would a problem? Like my app gets lost in an ocean of mail??

Eiswein, see my post in the Yale 2015 Hopefuls thread.
