I would think so

Hmmm...I'm staying in a hotel with my mom that night...(reconsiders)

im going alone-my parents live 900 miles away from where i go to school. does anyone know how far the train station is from campus?

a few blocks? Here's the website:

(Click on the MapQuest map)

I'm wondering if you can call Yale and arrange for your host to pick you up.

hm thats an idea-vivaldi, are you going to the diversity dinner?

I hadn't heard of it until this thread, but I'm thinking about it now...I'll see what I can find out about it on the website.

PREP, train station is very close - you can get a cab to campus for about $6, my son does it all the time.

are there frequent shuttles? is the walk safe?

Yeah, I was also wondering why the diversity dinner wasn't included as part of the Bulldog days agenda.

apparently, last year the dinner was such a success that they couldn't accommodate all the participants. this year, they decided to keep it a little more low-key.

I think they have practical considerations.

The "diversity" dinner is not intended for whites, or even asians, but was primarily set up as a recruiting tool aimed mainly at Blacks, and secondarily at Hispanics.

But giving special "perks" to URM's raises constitutional issues now.

The compromise is to pretend that everybody is invited, but not to make it part of the regular schedule so that people will get the message as to who is REALLY invited.

byerly -- really? where'd you hear/read that?

I couldn't even find it on the regular calendar...

Hey guys, couple of things:

The train station in new haven is really close to campus. ~5 bucks to get to Yale.

Diversity Dinner is on the night before and a student host can house you for that night before you meet up with your regular bulldog days host, at least that's the way it was done for me 3 yrs back

Don't listen to Byerly, he really has no basis for saying what he did about the diversit dinner, it is his idle (and biased) speculation on the matter.

Diversity Dinner usually has a pretty, unsurprisingly, diverse group of people: asians, indians, hispanics, african americans, etc. Mainly, I feel like it gives you a chance to spend another day at Yale. When I attended, I definitely felt like it was time well spent.

Please. I'm so tired of people reacting to Byerly as if he were anathema, and not worth listening to. Many times, he gives totally corroborated evidence and facts to go along with his opinions, more than most people who criticize him do.

Anyway, there are pragmatic considerations here when considering devices like "Diversity Weekends." The language in such invitations makes it very clear that they want to recruit minorities from the pool; however, they must keep within the bounds of the U Mich. Supreme Court decision and all its practical limitations. I'm not sure its such a bad thing, actually; certainly, a little transperency would be welcome in the admissions process, but if you're going to argue for transparency, there are more pressing things to rectified than in admissions than more open "diversity weekends". Realize that a university is nothing more than a massive corporation nowadays, and it simply tries to fufill its specific mandates and objectives - sometimes with a focused Machevillian sort of intensity.

Non-sequitur: I find it very amusing that people get so annoyed/rankled with Byerly. He's obviously intelligent enough that he can wordplay through any any perceived bias in his tone about different issues...the question is, why be stupid enough to want to catch him on one mistake? He gives out far more information that outweighs any percieved insult or slight that someone perceives. Use that information, and then laugh privately.

If I get in I wouldn't be able to get a flight in the 18th until about 5 in the evening, so I would have to fly in the 17th. I however am not "diverse". Being a white girl I guess I could provide a more well rounded perspective complete with a caucasian or two.

well we shall se what it is all about. i am going. yes, i am black.

Uhh, are you guys all going to the dinner w/ parents? I'm going to Bulldog days solo, so... I hope it's not too weird that I show up at a dinner all by myself, lol

im going by myself.

My aunt is coming with me. It's alright to go alone. If you are very worried about it, you can join us.

haha, thanks for the invitation chez, i'll keep that in mind =)
