Hello,
how hard is it to get into the yale school of music for a master degree?
I play the cello and piano, both up to diploma level, but have never won any awards in competitions. I am also not doing music as an undergraduate degree.

It's impossible if you don't apply! The good news is, if you do get in to Yale's graduate Music program, my understanding is that tuition is free because of a recent $100 million donation.

The competition for Yale School of Music is beyond tough. Arguably, the best grad school for music in the country. For performance, you will be competing against the top pool of candidates in the country... conservatory level, preprofessional and professional players. For the academic music disciplines, I think you'd be hard pressed to find a better program.

If you are playing at an extremely high level, have a serious performance background, have studied with the "best" for your instrument, have played at all semi pro or professionally and have a couple or three fellowship festival gigs under your belt, you have as much a chance as the next highly qualified candidate.

Most, if not all, of the instruments require a prescreening submission, and the app and prescreen deadline is Dec 1.

Be aware that once past the prescreen, it's primarily your audition that will count.

Good luck.

Applied and waiting to hear back on audition invite. Anyone else out there?
