Yale University Early Action for Fall 2024 Admission

Do they offer interviews to all applicants or is it random?

I’ve heard that it depends upon alumni availability but also if they want to know more about an applicant.

I don’t know enough to respond, but I don’t think any school has the resources to interview all applicants.

Is your son’s interview via Zoom?

Yes zoom and they gave him a short window to schedule so it’s on Monday.

Yes, Yale has gone to a system where people can either be interviewed by a local alum if available, or a Yale senior.

This is explained here:

https://admissions.yale.edu/interviews

An interview can provide an opportunity to share additional information with the Admissions Committee. All Yale interviews, both those with alumni and those with current Yale seniors, are evaluative. Admissions officers read interview reports alongside application materials. . . .

The Yale Alumni Schools Committee (ASC) conducts interviews wherever there is a local association of alumni volunteers. Also, a small group of Yale seniors serve as Senior Interviewers and conduct virtual interviews with selected applicants, regardless of location.

As that page also explains:

An interview is not a required part of the application process. Because of limited interviewing capacity, the Office of Undergraduate Admissions prioritizes interviews for students for whom the Admissions Committee needs more information. Students who do not receive an interview invitation will not be disadvantaged, but applicants are encouraged to connect with a Yale alumni interviewer or student interviewer if invited.

The Interview FAQ also elaborates on these matters:

https://admissions.yale.edu/faq/interviews

There is even more information about interviews available at the Yale Admissions Podcast, including an entire episode and also references to interview reports in the context of committee discussions:

There is a searchable transcript if you would like to use that.

Thank you

Interview invitations are first to be done through email and then text/call if there is no response to the email. Make sure to check your filters or the non-primary/special email address you sent to the AO.

Only about 9,000 interviews are completed each year in recent years. Plenty of kids get in without one and plenty (most) who get one don’t get in.

In general it will probably not make a difference – a prior yes will not turn into a no (unless the kid says something totally inappropriate or blatantly gets caught in a lie; a prior no will not turn into a yes). The interviews more or less fills in the edges for the impression that the AO already has formed.

when did he apply?

Any interview updates? Feeling a bit jittery now, haha

Sorry, that was my fault! I think I was confusing your case with another video interview with a senior case.

What state are you from?

@Jenmiro Do you know when your son completed his app? My daughter completed hers about a month ago. We are curious if her app has been reviewed. It sounds like they are getting through the early apps.

Still not seeing much chatter about interviews. Obviously tomorrow will be the two-week, AKA one-third, mark . . . .
