Yale Young Global Scholars 2015

Hey,

Is anyone considering applying? If you've already attended the program, please feel free to explain what you liked and disliked.

Thanks

Anyone?

I am applying!! I have heard that it is competitive and may help you be accepted into a top-notch college!

I am also applying, I just received an email informing apps were open. Best of luck!

I’m interested in applying, but I feel like my stats aren’t that great-- honestly I didn’t realize how many really smart people there are in the world until I started looking at summer programs T-T Here’s a rough estimate of my stats:
GPA 4.0 unweighted (not sure about my weighted but I’ve taken a lotta AP/honors classes)/ 2nd in my class
SAT II United States History: 760
AP US History: 4
ACT: 34 (only a 29 in math but 36 in science-- will that hurt me??) PSAT: 209 SAT: Taking in two weeks
Currently taking: AP Calculus BC, AP Human Geography, AP Computer Science, AP Literature, AP Chemistry
Extra-Curricular: Varsity Speech Team (Three years), Varsity Swimming (Four Years), Rochester Public School Foundation board member, Key Club (maybe secretary if I get voted on; 2 years), Volunteered for the local DFL office for many, many hours
I think that’s it-- any help? Should I even try for really competitive programs like Yale’s? (Sorry this is so long!! This is my first post and I don’t really know what I’m doing)

Hey,

@anchen‌

Your stats are very impressive. Which session are you planning on applying to? You academics and standardized test scores are well within YYGS’s caliber, but you haven’t demonstrated, at least in your post, an interest in science, government, or foreign relations (the main point in each of the three sessions).

@kzkzoh I’m interested in the science one, since I’m mainly interested in engineering maybe (my career path hasn’t exactly fully formed in my head yet). These competitive things are so nerve-wracking, jeez. Do you think this program bases itself most on the essays?

I’m looking at the application-- the recs in particular-- and I’m trying to figure out what “One recommendation must be from a teacher in an academic subject who knows you well” exactly means. Is it just a teacher who you’re buds with? Or does “academic subject who knows you well” mean a core subject from a class a currently taking??

@anchen‌

In the FAQs, they recommend that (if you’re interested in the science session) you submit one req from a science teacher. The other can be from any faculty or administrator at your school.

@kzkzoh‌ My letters are from my Philosophy and World History teacher and from the principal of the language school I used to go to. I’m applying to PLE!

Your scores and works are really great!!
But remember that what they are most looking for in the applicants are your motivation and the meaning of all these things to you!

Thanks guys! i took a really long break from this site because it was psyching me out haha but I got in!

Nice, which session? I got into PLE…

SPI (first choice) If i choose to attend I can’t wait to see you there!! (financial aid for another program doesnt come out for a little while now and I can’t afford it without aid)

Aww, good luck!
