Yale Young Global Scholars (YYGS) 2019

@bound2021 I’m not sure exactly but I’m pretty sure we get a good amount of free time :joy:

@Lunarlitgend What session/class are you in? I’m in session 3 (PLE) and I want to meet as many people as possible!

@bound2021 I’m in Block 2 for Literature Philosophy and Culture :slight_smile:
You?

@bound2021 PLE is pretty cool!
In fact, we might end up meeting each other because we’re In the same block!! :smiley:

has anyone gotten any waitlist decisions back? it’s been a while and i’m getting worried

For all of you waitlisted applicants, more than likely your chances of getting in are slim. Most summer programs have already notified people on their waitlists if they got in and I assume the same thing is happening for YYGS. My best piece of advice is to move on and try finding other summer activities to participate in. If you need any help with figuring out what to do, feel free to ask here or PM me.

hi! i just got off the waitlist a couple days ago for FST, so don’t lose hope!

God, that stinks. I’m going to be a senior and I thought I had pretty strong stats, it’s not making me feel much better. Guess I’m just not the right person.

Hi, I just got rejected from the waitlist and I am feeling super dissapointed. Do you have any recommendations about other summer programs that I could still apply for.

Are you overseas applicant? What session were you rejected from? Is it a recent days notice? Well, save the $6000 and find a good test prep service on SAT/ACT and get 1500/33, you may try to apply for real college program in future.

Yes, I am an overseas applicant and I was recently rejected from the waitlist for SDSE.

Hi Dev5
My son also got accepted to YYGS and we are from Bay area too.

Hi everyone. I applied earlier this year before Christmas and was accepted for the politics, law, and economics course. I’ll just describe my application if it is helpful for anyone who has applied and is weighing their odds. I am a junior and take the IB now so I had to enter my IB grades for my current grades, but my GPA unweighted for 9th and 10th was about a 3.93 -3.96 unweighted. I scored 1420 on my PSAT in 10th grade and scored in the 99th percentile for a separate standardized math test both years prior.

The main extracurricular I wrote about is MUN. I am the Deputy Secretary-General and wrote about my passion for the club. My first essay (the background, beliefs, values, etc. ) was about what I’ve learned as an adopted Vietnamese child growing up in a predominantly white community and what it has taught me (specifically about empathy). For my second essay (a topic I’m fascinated by), I wrote about the shifting political landscape and the global political arena (as that encompasses economics as well and what I am interested in studying). For my last essay (on an example of social inequality), I wrote about the wealth inequality in the United States as it is something very familiar to me being American. My letters of recommendations came from my two favorite teachers: my economics teacher and my global politics teacher.

For all those applying, I don’t actually believe that this is a very difficult program to get into. I am not the top student in my class but I spent a lot of time on my essays and curated an application that demonstrated and focused on my main interests (which were obviously related to my course). I don’t think it’s actually super competitive; so, I wouldn’t worry too much about it. Just put visible effort into your essays, and write about subjects you genuinely are passionate about, as well as relate to your course of choice. I am not going in the end because I found the Columbia Summer Immersion program which has an economics course I find more interesting, but best of luck to all those applying.

@Aress20 Actually, it’s fairly competitive for a summer program. You just don’t realize that you were a great applicant (because I read somewhere that the essays matter a lot) and you had the good grades and genuine interest in the course’s topic. I found this in their FAQ section:
“Is admission competitive?
Admission to each session of the program is very selective; for summer 2018, YYGS accepted 24% of applicants for all six sessions. While there is no competitive advantage to applying early, we encourage you to submit application materials as early as they are available to ensure that your application is complete by February 6, 2019.”

btw, did anyone else receive/fill out the interest forms for the seminars for their courses?

Hey! @bound2021 I am selected to attend ASE 2019 and everyone for Block 1 of the program has received the seminar interest form already. We also had a deadline for submission of the form. Trust me on this one, you’ll love the seminar offerings whatever your course is. They’re absolutely amazing.

Is anybody in Yygs 2019 from the Bay Area ?
Thanks

@Eastcoast234 Sorry, no, but I’m from Seattle!
@KshitijD101 Yea, I already filled mine out and submitted it. I will attend PLE session 3 (July-August) and the offered seminars looked sooo fascinating that I struggled choosing only 3

@Eastcoast234 … yes in the bay area… Session 2 for my daughter…
