Yale?

Hi all! I’m applying to Yale EA this fall, in less than a month. I want to know what you think my chances are. I know the chances are low for even a pure genius, but I thought it’d be good to get opinions…

I have a 97 average.

I’ve been a strong club member throughout my past 4 years of high school of the photography club and Girls Learn International (where we fundraised a lot).

I also intern personally for a well known actor, I work as a production coordinator for NYFW, and I work as a waitress as well at my local café.

My act is a 34. Unfortunately I got a 3 on my AP US exam and 4 on my AP Comp.

Last summer I attended a 7 week long coding camp for Girls Who Code.

I’m writing my essay on my relationship with my mom, who is bipolar and schizophrenic. And essentially verbally abusive. She’s kind of dysfunctional as a mom, and she doesn’t pay child support. So my dad has to care for me. His income is about 70k, but keep in mind we live in NYC (expensive) so we live in a bad neighborhood.

I’m also 1/4 Native American. My mom is a fully registered tribal member. I can’t register because I don’t live in the same state as my mom anymore. I emailed the admissions office and said precisely that, and the officer said it was okay for me to write that down if I feel identified as a NA (given that I actually AM Native, yes this is a side eye to every white person who’s tried to lie about being native) since I am by blood. Also, I know the school doesn’t keep track of level of interest, but I emailed Patricia Wei. She knows my school very well because it’s a famous arts school in NYC. She can (and did) list the kids off the top of her head who got into Yale from my school when I met her. So maybe that will give me a boost?

Also, question. For a supplement rec letter: should I ask my teacher from my coding program or the actor I intern for? I hate to pull name dropping games, it’s very sleazy, but I’m trying to win over the admissions office. Keep in mind I want to study computer science.

Any help would be great!!! I understand my chances are probably slim, but maybe someone has a helpful outside suggestion?

Best wishes to everyone applying for colleges currently!

Please try to make your application reflect you as best as possible. Most applicants to Yale are superstars in their own right and you want to humanize your application so that it has a chance of standing out of the pile. Instead of listing accomplishments and who you may know, talk about how these experiences affected you and how they will make you a better Yale student.

The supplemental rec is for when there is somebody with direct, relevant info about you that is not captured elsewhere in your application. You are saying that you want to do CS, and you aren’t sure who is the better person to write the supplemental rec?
