You got in - Now where you will you live? (UCLA)

^Oh I know, we lived downtown for a year and I HATED it. The loft was nice, but that’s the only good thing I can say about it. I will suggest the Palms to him. He would prefer to live somewhere in the valley, but I don’t drive and that commute could be rather long with public transportation.

Can you elaborate on why you hated living downtown? Was it the noise?

The noise was the main reason. Also, we had a 650sqft loft for $1500/month, plus we had to pay an additional $200/month for parking. Where our building is located was just not the ideal location for us. Waking up at 7am on weekend mornings to busses or parade preparation noise outside did not make us very happy. We lived on Broadway between 4th and 5th which is a rather dirty and loud area.

Anyone here choosing the health sciences theme as their highest preference? I wonder if they get many transfer students, or if I should go with the transfer theme for a better social experience?

hey I plan on living in a residence hall (dorm) or one of the plazas.
can’t wait!

When should we apply? Like right now? I haven’t heard back from everywhere so I’m not 100% sure I’ll end up at UCLA…

you’re trippin if you think a bike will be useful in helping traverse the rugged hills of westwood.

also, to those thinking to ‘dorm’… more than likely (like 95%), you’ll end up in a residential suite, not a res hall… this means that you will NOT be sharing bathrooms/showers with your entire floor, as they do in res halls. instead, you’ll have either a tripple, wherein you and two others share a bathroom with the room (of 3) adjacent yours; a double - same exact layout, but with 2 per room, instead of 3; or a single, where you’ve got one bathroom / shower between 4 other people, if i’m not mistaken.

there are also other arrangements (saxon) where you’ll have two rooms of three people, a separate bathroom and shower, and a small living room (no kitchen).

again, there’s a very, very small likelihood of you getting placed in a res hall (hedrick / sproul / rieber hall, if it’s open).

^hey pinkerfloyd, can you give details on the specific names of where transfers will likely end up? I have had my eye on hedrick, sproul and dykstra, but they are all res hall. How come transfers cant live in res halls?? Because they are all filled up?

Oh, I looked it up. Are transfers limited to saxon and hitch?? Thats so depressing…
I was looking forwards to living in a res hall!

i copy guitarfrk! i’ve been @ CC so i want to have the whole college experience that i’ve been missing!

oh, and i heard from my friend @ ucla that they’re trying to get transfers into delta terrace - w/e that means. she said it’s ‘pretty hood’ there

yeah dude…I just talked to my friend at ucla about saxon and hitch suites.

I quote…“Yeah its socially dead and its expensive as hell.”

if 95% of transfers end up there…then w t f mannnn

Yeah, I’m also curious. Should we apply for housing now even if we’re still waiting for another school? I’m almost positive I’m going to UCLA, I just want to be wait and hear from Cal.

i have an offer to room (not pledge) with my dad’s old fraternity for CHEAP. i don’t want this, and would rather dorm like a freshman…but if the only other option is to stay in a dark, antisocial cave, i will

well, they’re currently doing ‘hella’ construction around de neve… they’re building an entirely new res hall… and, from what i hear, come next year, de neve is going to be turned into ‘transfer housing’. currently, i live in rieber terrace. about half of my floor consists of transfer students. the other half are mostly second year students. there’s one freshman…
if de neve really is going to be designated as transfer housing for next year, you’ll all have it good. it is NOT ‘hood’, and the rooms are situated directly above the best of the four dining halls (which, however close, is an unwelcomed trek from anywhere else on the hill).

i’ll should tell you… initially, i opted for the res halls, too. when i found out that i was assigned to rieber terrace, i felt cheated… shafted… but i see now that it was for the best… the res halls are for FRESHMAN. they’re for 18 year olds experiencing freedom for the first time, taking the same classes, and making the same new friends. take my word for it… you’re better off elsewhere.

on a personal note, i’d opt out of saxon or hitch. it’s not so much that they’re so removed… i mean, if you’re a social person, you’ll make friends with the people you live around regardless… it’s just that for near the same price as a tripple in sax / hitch, you can have a double in rieber hall / terrace / de neve / sunset…

bottom line: i know that it seems sort of unnatural, but at least try to trust that they’ve assigned you to the right building… your roommates are always a gamble, but, from what i know, they do at least attempt to group you in the place most suitable to your circumstance.

don’t trip.

you’ll all love it here.

^thanks pinkerfloyd! that honestly made me feel much better!

Yes! I’d like to echo that ‘thank you!’

Is it hard to get into the off-campus university apartments? I can’t afford any of the options on campus.

how difficult is it to get a single with a shared bathroom?

I hear we can’t bring mini-fridges :(
