Think carefully about the issue presented in the following excerpt and the assignment below.

To change is to risk something, making us feel insecure. Not to change is a bigger risk, though we seldom feel that way. There is no choice but to change. People, however, cannot be motivated to change from the outside. All of our motivation comes from within.

Change is a natural thing in life, and it can be motivated by either external or internal circumstances. Although external stimuli may play an important role, real change is ultimately motivated from within. This can be seen clearly in the novel Who moved My Cheese? as well as our everyday experiences of working and studying.

In the novel Who Moved My Cheese?, the tale of two little men and two little mice are related to explain the importance of change. Both groups survive on cheese, which magically appears in their environment. However, the cheese stops appearing one day. The two mice quickly adapt and move out to search for cheese, while the two men refuse to accept change and stubbornly remain where they are. While the men begin to starve, the mice have already found a new supply of cheese. Finally, the men are forced to move out by desperation. This novel aptly demonstrates that, while people may be motivated by external circumstances, change ultimately comes from within. It was an internal decision by the mice to move quickly, and it was also an internal decision by the men to move only after they had no other options. Thus, people are motivated to change from within.

The fact that change comes from within can also be seen in our experiences in working and studying. We are often pushed by our parents to work hard. However, even if one were to improve his study habits temporarily due to outside pressure, this would not be true, permanent change. A true change would have to come from within to be effective. I have personally experienced this very fact: only when I choose to study hard do I truly do well. This fact can further be proven when we see that those who are motivated internally to study usually are among the academic elite. Thus, school and study teach us again that change ultimately is motivated from within.

When people change, they can be motivated by either external or internal factors. However, change caused by such external factors is only temporary. For example, drug addicts often relapse once they check out of a clinic. Only change that is internal in nature can be truly effective.

Oops, I noticed I made a minor typo in the last sentence of the intro, forgetting to capitalize "moved" in the title of the book.

Bump. Anyone else, please? :)

Your introduction doesn't have a good hook and your conclusion lacks closure.
