"You'll get a letter in 2-4 weeks..."

luv2sail: I did check it! (at least twice a day!) It is just the same old..."youre app has been recieved and is being reviewed... I auditioned the last day as well....so I dont know! Im getting so anxious. What is the status on your son?! And what did his online status change too?

MO2: Thats what I was told over the phone as well....the woman told me it was mailed on Tuesday, and like I said, I only live 2 hours from the school! So I have no clue what is going on! When did your son audition?

"Your application is complete, all of your required materials are here, and we are reviewing your credentials. A decision will be available here as soon as one is made." This is what his reads now. He auditioned at CHI unifieds early Feb.. so who know. He figures no news is good news and goes to bed at night with that thought in mind... so sweet dreams! As for his mom... she hasn't slept in weeks! JK...

MO2: My mom is just getting fed up with my worrying!!! Thats exactly what mine says as well...as far as I know all of the kids who were deferred from PSU, their status's stayed exactly the same as your son's and mine is right now...so can our not changed statuses mean a waitlist possibly?

He has been accepted and on his online status it said,

Welcome XXXXX,

Congratulations on your acceptance to Penn State!
I am pleased to offer you admission to The College of Arts & Architecture for Fall 2009 at Penn State University Park. While a packet of materials will be in the mail to you shortly, I hope that the information provided here will help give you a head start on thinking about your offer to Penn State.

I don't know if it has anything to do with when you submit your application to the University, but his was done back in November. Perhaps they are processing the decisions based on when the applications were sent in as the admissions office has to process all of the academic portions for approval before a final decision can be determined. Hope that helps. I know that the waiting is painful. Good luck :)

luv2sail: that very well could be a reason as well! I didnt apply to the school until the end of January! Congrats to your son! I am so greatful to you and MO2 for all of your help at this late hour!

Ill keep you all posted :)

Luv2sail,
CONGRATULATIONS to your son! That's great news!
I'd love to add him to the MT Forum's growing acceptance list. I want to make sure I have it right from your posts....he is accepted to PSU for MT and Engineering, and it seemed from other posts he also is in at UMich for both too? If you can clarify that I have this correct from your posts, I'd be happy to add him on the threads with our acceptances for this year's seniors!

When my son called earlier this week, he was told that a decision had already been made, that he'd hear something shortly. So, I don't think he was waitlisted... he may be held up due to academics? If that even matters?

soozievt....not exactly correct. MT only for PSU and Engineering only for UMich. I will post all of his results when they are in as he has been accepted to 3 MT so far. Thanks.

Great news!

OK, no need to tell us anything else you are not ready to share. Any acceptances on the MT threads such as the one you wrote above on this thread for PSU for the BFA, we try to add to the list we have on the top of the MT forum and so I will add that one for now since you posted it. I wanted to make sure I understood your post.

Good thing my kid was home to get the mail today, as I would have texted to school with an excited, 'You have a fat envelope from Penn State!' Worst rejection cover letter I've seen, offering her to sign up for another major. They don't know these MT kids well if they thought they'd be interested in a different major!! Included was all the stuff to accept admission to another major. Just giving you a heads up as I am sure she opened it thinking it was an acceptance. Very poor taste, Penn State!

Mom4X,
I can relate as I had a similar experience but it wasn't with Penn State. Four years ago, my daughter applied Early Action and auditioned Early Action to Emerson. I do not open her mail. A very close friend of hers at school also auditioned and applied EA to Emerson. While my D was at school, I drove out to my mailbox and the mailperson was just delivering it and I saw a fat envelope and got so excited thinking my daughter had gotten into Emerson. Her friend drove home for lunch and got the mail and went back to school and told my D that she had been admitted. That got D to call home and ask me to get the mail and open it and tell her over the phone (even though she knows I would not normally open her mail). This was a month before she got her license so she could not drive home. So, while she was on the phone from school, I opened it and with lots of excitement in my voice I was reading it and telling her how she was accepted and the packet had tons of stuff for accepted students in it and I went down the letter further and came to that she was deferred for the BFA in MT but had been accepted to Emerson itself. At the time, we had no idea such an outcome was possible and thought she'd either get in for everything, be rejected for everything, or deferred for everything. We did not realize that the school might accept a student but then defer for the BFA. So, in the middle of my enthusiasm to D, it all changed (while it is a nice affirmation to be accepted to Emerson College, she'd have had no interest in attending without the BFA in MT). As it turned out, her friend who my D thought was accepted, had the same result (accepted to the college, deferred for the BFA). As it turned out on April 1, friend got into the BFA at Emerson, and my D did not. Friend eventually opted to switch into a BA at Emerson during her time there as her interests changed focus (still in performing arts though). Friend got rejected at Tisch (clearly not for academic reasons as she was class salutatorian), and my D got into Tisch. This is a very crazy process!

PS...be aware that a thin envelope may not be a rejection. My D was accepted to Ithaca and it was just a letter.

FYI while some state schools let candidates know before MT acceptances Penn State does not. The Admissions office waits until a MT decision is rendered. Sometimes, though rare, a candidate will make it into MT but NOT the University. The MT department sends its own letter and it is unfortunte when the School's brown envelope arrives before the MT rejection letter but the Admissions office is required to notify a candidate if in fact they do gain admittance to the University at large and operates separate from the MT department in that regard. Good luck to your daughter at her other schools.

ttmom, I happen to agree with you that the way they do it is fair.

It is just so hard as each school's admissions process differs a lot, which can make it rather confusing to all.

The same thing (a fat envelope showing a line that says "You're in!" or some similar wording) just happened yesterday to a young friend of mine. The fat envelope was not from PSU but from another BFA program. The student's parent texted the student at school to give the student the good news. (This was without opening the package, which the kid wanted to do.)

Well, when the student got home and opened the packet, he/she had been admitted to a completely different major.

It does seem to be poor taste, but from the school's point of view, how else could they do it? They can't print "We have some good news and some bad news" on the envelope.

Still, it's a shock to a lot of these kids.

Well I opened my mailbox today and on top was a small, thin envelope from none other than Penn State....expecting a rejection, a tore the envelope open.

BUT I am not rejected, Im on the waitlist. To quote the musical "Parade", This is not over yet! There is hope! So is there any chance that somebody knows how many people they place on the waitlist? I am aware that offer admitance to 16...

svb...I don't know how many are on the wait list but congratulations! And hey, good news can come in small packages and bad news in big ones...who knew? :D

I realize the school takes more than the number they wish to yield but let's remember that many applicants get into more than one school and so slots do open up. It may happen for you. You can't count on it and must move forward with your other acceptances and plan accordingly but the door is not completely shut for you at PSU.

My son was admitted to MT today. He is sooooo excited and feel so blessed!!!!!!!

Happy for your son, Momsonfaith!

so i was deferred and recently found out i was rejected by getting that large academic acceptance packet. i was just wondering whether i would actually get a formal rejection letter from the theatre department or whether that was it. it doesn't really make a difference, i'm just curious. thanks :)

I am pretty sure that the big envelope asking you if you'd like another major is it. Cover letter is the rejection letter. My D did not receive anything else, and the big packet went to the recycle bin. At least they acknowledged your smarts! I expect that not everyone on the 'not accepted to MT' list got offered the choice of a different major.
