Young Scholars Program (YSP) @ Davis 2012

Hi!

So I'm applying for YSP...

What are the typical stats of an accepted applicant?
How selective is the program?

I'll post my stats if anyone replies...
Thanks!!

(I'm literally praying I get in...)

I’m probably applying too. I’m pretty sure they only accept 40 people. So I’m guessing its pretty competitive… I already applied to UF SSTP ( Hoping I get in).

I know one guy from my school who got in last year.
he had a 3.7 gpa soph year and 2400 sat, only extra curricular was piano for 10ish years.

a bunch of my friends are applying to ysp this year too.

wow. One person I knew applied with something like a 4.0 unweighted and a bunch of leadership positions in science clubs and a bunch of awards and only got waitlisted…

sorry, i meant he had a 4.7 gpa weighted, 4.0 pga uw

Hey humblebumblebee,

The application didn’t ask for SAT scores… so I didn’t put mine… I got a 2340 though. Do you know where he included his score on his app?

Also, for all of you guys applying, what are your stats?

Bump…

Is anyone else applying?..
ok then

According to someone else on CC, there are over 500+ applicants so far…

^Really??? Aww, crud…

I’m applying as a sophomore with OK stats and OK extracurriculars. They’re pretty good for my school, but to be one of the 40 selected out of prob. 6-700 applicants…

By the way, does anyone else think that all the things they require are a bit…much? I don’t know, perhaps it’s just me as an inexperienced sophomore…

@archaic Really??? On their facebook, they wrote “Over the weekend 25 more people submitted their online application bringing our grand total to 100! We have over 300 more applications that haven’t been submitted yet and we’re looking forward to getting to review all of them!” on March 5th…

Hopefully some of those people won’t follow through with the submission…

@collegeluva101, what classes are you taking?

and I’m a sophomore too! Was it just me, or was the limit 200 characters super restrictive? I had wayy more stuff to write that didn’t even fit…

@GenCross, I take Pre-Calc., Calc. at a local community college, chemistry, human biology last semester at the same community college, and all the highest possible levels for other classes, no AP/IB allowed yet, sadly. HBU? Also, I agree that the 200 character limit is super restrictive. Was it with or without spaces? Because without, I barely made it, but with I was WAAAAYYY over…

I’m pretty sure it’s with spaces… but I’m not really sure… I’m taking IB Chem and Bio and Pre-Calc too; my community college doesn’t take high school students…:(

Hey Guys,

So I attended YSP last year so I thought I’d put my thoughts on the program. It is a very underrated program. Only 330 applicants last year for a research internship that is invaluable come college application season (I based about half of my essays off of the research I did last summer). But I’m sure you guys already love YSP–since your applying. The counselors (also adcoms) really want to see you guys that have more than pure test scores and grades. Show them who you are in the essays! They have plenty of applicants with stellar scores, but since they can only accept 40 to the program you have to set yourself apart through your application responses! If you guys have any specific questions, feel free to ask! Im not on CC too much but ill respond as soon as I can

I tried to… but 150 words is so little… I couldn’t fit everything I wanted to say. Also, @Gecko245, do they take the graded writing sample seriously, or is that just for the people on the border?
And is the research you do there significant; like, will you be able to enter science fairs with it?
It seems like the competition is pretty stiff; someone on here said the over 500 people were making applications…

Also, @Gecko245, what set you apart?

I know a probably sound like an obsessed freak with all these posts, but I want to go to YSP so badly. Whenever I think about going and all the experiences I’ll have, I get so happy… It’s the one thing in my life right now that actually makes me smile. I know that people will be like, “Geez calm yourself; it’s just a summer program. It’s not that big of a deal…” Getting accepted would literally be the best thing…

@GenCross, I understand. My friends think I’m crazy for even wanting to do a summer program, but being accepted would just be…amazing…
