I feel unaccomplished now…my school doesn’t offer anything writing related, and the only thing outside of just writing for fun that I’ve done is spend three hours each day for about three weeks (while I attended Missouri Scholar’s Academy this summer) in a writing course. :(

@lbmatson @coloraturakid @britatos @Ozymandeos
Thanks for sharing! I love to hear your stories about how much effort you have put in your discipline. You all have worked so hard to follow your passion. No matter you will win something or not, you are amazing young artists!

@Ozymandeos ikr, I feel so inadequate after reading that. But you have to remember that everyone’s on a different track, especially in the arts. Just because you haven’t been taking ballet since you were a baby and you haven’t performed with the president doesn’t mean you’re a bad artist (if you have… good for you!).

I have a pretty strong background in theatre (I’m not good with counting up hours). Last year I was cast in my first professional show. It was a small theatre but a really great experience. I got cast in another, much bigger professional show this year, but the time commitment was too much so I had to drop out before rehearsals started :(. I do all the shows at my school and have always done theatre programs in the summer. I take acting classes at school and have won awards at theatre conventions (which I won scholarships to in the first place ). I’m also a leader on a nearby professional theatre’s Teen Council. We organize events, including field trips to other theaters, master classes with professional artists, and more.

I used to write a lot more when I was younger, but not so much lately. I got back into playwriting this summer at a pre-college program and then revised my play for a few months. I’m also the lead critic for my school’s Cappies team (combination of journalism and theatre) and have had my reviews published in the Philadelphia Inquirer.

My focus is on academics. I’m taking the hardest courses offered at my school. I also participate in National History Day and have made it to the state level two years in a row (last year I made it to nationals!).

This is such a great thing to discuss. Hearing all of your experiences motivates me as well!
I have taken private voice since 8th grade and performed with the Gilbert and Sullivan Light Opera Company of LI. I have also performed in many musicals and showcases. My school has a very strong music department, but not a very big drama department, so I have been able to spend a lot of time singing (Concert Choir, Sweet Adeline’s, Vocal Jazz, etc…). I got into All-State Mixed Chorus this year!! However, I realized this year that I prefer straight plays and a focus that is more on acting, so I won’t be majoring in musical theatre or vocal performance (this is also why I applied for Spoken Theater instead of Musical).
I am absolutely in love with the New York State Summer School for the Arts. I attended the school of choral studies in 2012 and just attended the school of theatre this past July. Other summer programs have been more musical theatre based, but they were all really helpful. I have also participated in lots of vocal and acting competitions throughout high school.

did anyone get a call yet? whenever someone posts I think someone got a call…

if calls come out, it’ll be in the afternoon. Try waiting about 5-6 more hours.

I’ve studied with my drawing and painting teacher since I was 7, but now I mainly use his art class as a studio. It’s been a great experience, but most of the emphasis is on direct observation, technique, and realism, so my creativity and abstract drawing is kind of shaky. (That’s my main fear of my artwork- that it’s not creative or unique enough) I mainly do graphite, ink, and oil painting (my love ) but I also do chalk pastel and watercolor.

My main focus is on academics, and considering I’m taking 5 AP course this year as well as competing in many academic competitions, I don’t have much time to devote to the arts. Sure, my parents are supportive of me painting and such, but most of the time, I think that they wish I would focus more on my academics without “diverting my attention” on the arts. As a straight A, distinguished honors students who absolutely loves art too, it’s really difficult for me to ration out my time.

I’ve competed in the national academic tournament alongside my team before (second in nation woohoo ) and also numerous mathematics competitions and placed in state level and gone onto nationals too, so it takes up a lot of my time. I really wish I could have time for everything, but sadly, one cannot have everything.

Good luck to all! I really hope the calls go out soon.

Does anyone know what time of day calls will be made? Because i have to keep my phone off for the majority of the rest of the day.

@avidinterper most likely in the afternoon, depending on where you are in the US (likely 2 on the west coast and 5 on the east coast)

@16elir @achieving11 @OverInfinity Hearing all of your experiences is a great thing in reading this thread. Thank you! Let’s fall in love with the process of what we do and let the results take care of themselves.

Wow, it’s crazy to see how much effort you guys have put in !
I attend a regular public high school in a super rural area (chicken farms and corn fields for miles and miles) and has been going to a studio to paint for about 4 years now. I use to spend 2 hours on saturday/sunday each when I was a freshman, but gradually increased my time and now I’m here from 12:00pm-6:00pm every Saturday and Sunday drawing/painting. During the weekdays I just come from school (no art classes during that time :[ ) and work on academics and commissions from online. I also freelance for different game sites, drawing pets and items. Because I decided to go for art in my Junior year, I’m cramming in as many competitions as possible c:

Hey guys, I know your disciplines aren’t all visual arts, but do any of you know any good visual arts competitions that you could recommend?

@winterbi I wish I could put more time into the arts What other competitions do you do?

Does anybody know any other writing competitions besides Scholastic?

@OverInfinity I’m planning to enter the Congressional Art Competition, Scholastic, and local art competitions (well, not really local, but state. I live in Maryland)… really I don’t have that much on my list, but I’m constantly looking for more! I totally understand you, I regret taking so many AP classes this year… I would rather focus on my art ugh

@OverInfinity When you turn 18, or if you’re already 18, then you could enter in the Elizabeth Greenshields foundation . It’s a scholarship competition if your discipline is either painting, drawing, sculpture or printmaking.

@CeruleanShadow The Bennington Young Writer’s Awards is another writing competition for poetry, nonfiction, and fiction (including short stories and plays). However, the deadline for the competition was November 1st, and only first and second place winners receive prizes (i.e., money). I also know that The Claremont Review and The Adroit Journal hosts writing competitions in prose and poetry, and even Princeton University’s Leonard Milbert Poetry Prize is open to submissions until later this month. Also, the publication company Random House is hosting a Creative Writing competition including poetry (spoken word), fiction/drama, personal essays/memoir, and graphic novels in February that result in scholarships up to $10,000 like YA. Hope this helps!

Has anyone been contacted today? This waiting game is killing me.

@britatos Woop! That totally helps, thanks! ;)

I guess nobody got contacted today, fingers crossed for tomorrow!
