YoungArts 2016

I also did the geographical analysis for the LA regional. There is only one SoCal person in her category (Design), so we’ll see.

oh @letterhead & @rampions I really hope these amazing winners get there spots on Monday.
yes, my D is very grateful, as always, for being in the YoungArts family.
Congrats to all.

@coloraturakid - thanks and the same to your daughter! There are two in my daughter’s category, so I’m hoping it’s the 3-4 end of your 2-4!

So. Got the “we’re full in your discipline and category” email. I can hardly believe it. They said they would notify us 12/29 if space had opened up. So bummed for daughter. Hope you fared better, @rampions .

@letterhead I also got that email. So mad but thankful for the opportunity. I realized that with my discipline I had no chance of getting in; Miami breathes visual arts. All the winners there (over 20 Visual Arts winners from one Miami high school alone) probably had to compete with each other to RSVP.

Same here with Miami, I appreciate the chance for such an amazing opportunity but I’m still really sad that there were so many people that we had to RSVP within practically 5 minutes to get a chance.

Dang, @MandomeLife! Did you have a second choice city? I don’t know if the chances are any better in one of the others. FWIW I did send an email asking what the chances were.

@letterhead Yes, I listed New York. I received a really quick email back from YA about my alternative program:

Hello, ______

At this time we are only going through first choices. As stated below we will reach out to the waitlisted winners again on the 29th if space becomes available in either program.

Sincerely,

I don’t think anyone who applied to any of the programs would be slow in replying if they got accepted to their respective program, so I don’t think I have a chance to get into New York. But I still have next year to apply to, though I’m not sure how any of the programs might fit into my college schedule.

@Sandshrew What was your discipline? And are you applying next year? Would be cool to loosely keep in touch if we end up as Finalists for YA 2017, or end up going to the same regional.

@letterhead @MandomeLife @Sandshrew - I feel terrible for you. My daughter was given the green light today (NYC/theater) - I spent all weekend worrying and finally spilled the beans to her about the situation After the you’re in email arrived. That email said one had to confirm back to them by the 28th, so the 29th notification to you makes sense. I will think good thoughts for all of you.

I’m so grateful to YA, but at the same time think they should be clearer about how this all works, in that first congratulatory email. Then hopes wouldn’t be built up for a month as they were for us. At least one knows that as a YA winner of any kind one is considered a lifetime winner and surely there will be other programs, whether one-day or otherwise, to partake of through the years.

@coloraturakid - thank for all the good information and I guess our daughters will get to know each other in April!

We also got the email that said your first choice was full. We live in NJ. I was under the impression that if you got into the regional program it was all expenses paid. Do I have that wrong?

I believe it is all expenses paid. Which program did you list as your first choice?

@rampions! this is happy news…
although I am gutted for all the other incredible winners who haven’t had the green light as of yet.
it’s rotten to not know that this is a possibility at the get go :frowning:

“There is not a cap on any of the disciplines/categories, however, it is looked at by each region and acceptance of the waitlist is determined based on which disciplines/categories are attending within the region already. Then, depending on the space we have available we notify those on the waitlist in each discipline/category by their designated time stamp.”

Thanks, @rampions. I am so happy for the winners and wish all the kids were able to go!

@lindaC123 & @OhPearl -
I’m not sure about that. We are Manhattan based and last years program was not all expenses paid for all the participants, maybe some…but travel was not reimbursed. Subway, trains, buses and airfare was not paid for the winners we talked to. Not sure what went on if you needed a hotel room.
Finalists going to Miami in January have all expenses paid. Regionals are different.
Although I’m not 100% sure what YA offers each person.
My daughter was not reimbursed for subway or taxis she needed to use to get from school to the Baryshnikov Art centre and then home. Which wasn’t a big deal, but might have been for others in the program. Especially if you are making a 2-3 hour journey each day.

From the Congrats email: “YoungArts will notify you of admission/waitlist status for the program you requested no later than Monday, December 21, 2015. YoungArts provides airfare, lodging, transportation, and meals during this program.”

@letterhead - yes that’s what it says, but other than snacks & meals she was not reimbursed for any travel. Most of the regional spots ( at least in NYC 2015) were kids who did not need airfare and or a hotel room.

We should be getting a follow-up email today with more details on registration and, hopefully, things like this, as a weekly train ticket into NYC from where we are is a couple of hundred dollars - which is beyond worth it, obviously, and will be "happy " to pay for it - but I did wonder, considering the wording that @letterhead refers to. Also if overnight accommodation is offered to those who live beyond a certain radius, she would love both the immersion, the community and the lack of a long commute daily. I’ll share here if anything comes in on that.

@rampions! absolutely agree. more than happy to pay her way to participate. I hope they offer you guys transport and accommodation. that’s not on offer to us. all the paper work we have from registration and FAQs say “you are responsible for getting yourself to and from the theater” CC doesn’t let me copy and paste :frowning:
Last year the program was after school hours ( so my D did half a day, being a juniour she wasn’t able to just take off a week) this year it looks like the schedule starts in the mornings, which is brilliant as they really need as much time as possible. And as a senior she’ll be more than willing to miss week of classes in late April.
