YoungArts Question

If your S got a different YoungArts ID# for each submission, I think you can log in to their system and see if it’s marked as submitted. That’s what I did this morning so I’m assuming that’s as good as an email, though I’m not sure.

We also learned about YoungArts through cc a couple years ago when D submitted for MT, so I’m glad that tradition is continuing!!

We also learned about it through CC the year my D entered too!

MomCares, I think if you log into the system to see if your application was marked as “submitted,” that is only for the actual written application part. There does not seem to be a surefire way of knowing that your video audition piece(s) are uploaded. I know some people are getting emails, but at this point everything is so clogged up they are saying it may take 48 hours to get the confirmation email, which will put you past the application deadline. So, it’s a leap of faith that your materials are actually there…

Yes the “submitted” on the website is just for the written part of the application. I did just receive an email that my S’s audition file was received, so at least I know he made the deadline. The email came about 40 hours after he uploaded Wednesday evening. Like you said monkey13, if you submitted yesterday or today, I guess you just have to trust that everything went thru OK!

Best of luck to all!

I called several times to verify submission. Even after getting a submission received message at the bottom of the screen, my S’s material was not submitted.

Thanks to CC we were able to enter YA for the first time this year. I have a question about the selection process for those who have entered before. Are they looking for a perfect performance, raw talent, or potential? I was very curious which category they were seeking (for those that have participated in the past).

I was also wondering that. Also, what is YoungArts week like for writing?

Hi- I submitted my application form but never received an email with my ID numbers? (as in the email that is supposed to provide you with the upload link)
It is distinct from the PIN number right?
How should I notify them about this?
I called them and it says on the voice message that applications must be received no later than Wednesday at 5:00 EST.

@monkey13 - Thanks! It turned out that S got a confirmation email on the 19th saying his submissions uploaded successfully, which was a relief as for his instrument he had to upload many rather long selections. Whewh!

I can’t say what they looked for the year D was a Finalist, since I never spoke to the judges, but it did seem that most of the kids had quite a bit of experience and training. I think D said that most went to Performing Arts schools (not all, as D didn’t), and D already knew several of the MT Finalists from MPulse and/or the ITS festival in Nebraska. I know at least some of the kids had professional experience, several had leads at Interlochen and similar programs, and one went on to win the Jimmy’s her year (2 years ago).

I’m guessing it varies depending on who the adjudicators are this year, and also depends on what category you submit in. For example in S’s instrumental category, where 5 pieces meeting specific criteria must be submitted, I can’t imagine that one could even submit unless they’d trained fairly seriously for ~10 years. With MT it seems more possible for someone with raw talent to make a strong submission.

S has no expectation of even a Merit letter, as most years NO instruments in his category are selected for anything, but in MT/Theatre there are many more slots for winners so my fingers are crossed for all of you.

Good luck everyone!!

At d’s high school just about everyone enters YoungArts. Similar to what Momcares said, the MT YoungArts Award Winners from d’s high school the past two years have been very polished performers, the ones at the top of the class – with lots of talent, experience, and training. No “raw talents” from her HS have made the list and there have been no surprises as to who made the list.

Thank you @MomCares! I was just curious. My S is young and we wanted to go through the process for practice, but we also have no serious expectation of any award letter.

Best Wishes to all!!!

Intrinsically,
I don’t know how to put your question in the body of my reply (sorry, pretty new at this) but this is in response to your question about the email you should have received from Young Arts after you submitted your application. Yes, the upload links that should have been in your email are different from your PIN. You should have gotten an email saying that your application had been received, and then a list of download links (or only one if you were just planning to submit for one category). My S filled out his app on Sep. 30, and received the upload link email on Oct. 1, so it took about 24 hours. If it has been longer than that for you, you might want to first check your spam or junk folder and see if it somehow got routed there, and if it did not I would call the Young Arts office - their # is on the website, and when I had a question a week or so ago someone did actually pick up the phone and answer my question.

Good luck to you - hope you can get it all straightened out in time to submit!

I’m not sure how the process worked last year, but I can say for certain the process this year is different than the year before last. That year, the application deadline was quite a bit earlier than the submission deadline, and all submissions were mailed rather than uploaded. That avoided the current problem of people applying the same day submissions are due, hence not having time to receive the YoungArts ID number prior to submission.

Sounds like there are some kinks in the newer process to be worked out for next year, but I’m certainly glad we didn’t have to pay the ~$80 we spent for overnight shipping D’s year and could instead upload the submissions. ;-D

Without this board, I would not have known about NFAA and YoungArts either. My daughter received an Honorable Mention in '07 and was a finalist in '08 and was able to attend YoungArts Week. She was totally blown away by the talent at YoungArts Week ACROSS the board in ALL disciplines. She did not attend a performing arts HS so loved being surrounded by others that were at the top of their game with the same passion and committment that she had.

And, we were another of the ones that paid for express shipping (my husband actually took my daughter’s tape to the FedEx at the airport to get it shipped out on time!) but well worth it!!

Best of luck to all who are entering this year. Can’t wait to read some more success stories!!

Hi thanks for your help, I ending up finding the numbers in my junk folder and emailing the entries in as per the instructions this morning.
Good luck to everyone!

Finalists are being notified! We were notified today!

^Congratulations!!

Wow that’s early! Were you notified for MT or something else?

CONGRATULATIONS!!!

Finalists were notified today! I have three friends in for art, one for straight theatre, and I got a phone message but wasn’t home in time to call back. So hopefully I’m a finalist too, in writing or art, (I submitted for both), but the point is that finalists in all areas have been notified. They should release HM names relatively soon as well, and that’s a huge honor too, so if you didn’t get a call, it’s not completely over!

Exciting! I know in D’s year calls went out over a few days, and last year they were even slower, so it’s possible that not everyone was called today. This is also about a week earlier than D’s year, though, so maybe they’ve refined their process.

Those of you going to Miami are in for a wonderful week!

Apparently S got a voice mail message from Young Arts yesterday while he was out. They want him to call back, so fingers crossed. Classical voice, btw.
