YoungArts Question

Congrats to your daughter, tracy! Bravo!

How did you see that? When I just checked, it didn’t show any Honorable Mention or Merit.

A little while ago, they showed up when I checked. It seems a little odd to post it publicly before notifying all the recipients though.

Hm… It’s up now: [Our Program | YoungArts](http://www.youngarts.org/voice-0) This is just HM in Voice, but the others are there also.

@tracyvp - CONGRATULATIONS to your D!!

I just looked at the theatre list, and two guys D knows are Honorable Mentions. They are both insanely talented and have many professional credits, so this years’ Finalists must be amazing!

My daughter just got an email that she is a merit winner in spoken theater- received at 7 PM EST. The notification process was unusual this year-- she has a friend who told her that he received a letter in the mail for HM over a week ago. Perhaps some of this is the result of the recent slow-down at the post office?

@glassharmonica – CONGRATULATIONS!

glassharmonica, many congrats to your daughter! Besides the achievement, it should give you a bit of an indication of her competitiveness moving in the BFA admissions process.

tracyvp - Congrats again to your D. ;0)

Thanks, soozievt. She actually feels embarrassed for not having done better. She had a stressful time trying to make the tape to conform to their requirements about unbroken curtain backgrounds, etc., because she does not have access to a stage or auditorium. This meant construction lamps teetering on tables, bedsheets taped to walls, and and awkward angle for filming. She had to record over and over because the tape kept coming slightly too long, so she had to make more cuts in the contemporary monologue. The final take she sent in was not the best-- it was just the shortest. I wish she could have had a sense of how important it was to follow the filming directions precisely, but she did not want to take a chance on being eliminated on a technicality.

Are YoungArts Merit winners considered for the US Presidential Scholar in the Arts?

No, only the finalists are considered for Presidential Scholar in the Arts.

Just want to bump this as a reminder that summer is a GREAT time to record your YoungArts audition!

It is worth checking the new requirements, as I think now some younger people may also apply!

I just had a question about the audition process. First of all, is it still somewhat “looked down upon” to sing a song that is pretty well known vs. one that is obscure? I know that is an ongoing debatable topic for college auditions and wondered if it was the same for this. Along with that, is it better to showcase both a belt and legit song even if I am much stronger in one area over the other?

Hopefully someone who was a finalist last year can answer, but I can speak for the year before last when D went to Miami.

Several finalists D’s year did songs from Aida, which I’d have thought were overdone but that obviously didn’t hurt them. The majority of the finalists did songs of the type used for auditions, though some used Jason Robert Brown songs which generally don’t lend themselves to short audition cuts.

At least one female finalist did a legit piece, but most were belters. D tried to choose a song that showed a little of her head voice, some solid belting, and some acting. I think a few people submitted to both classical and MT voice, and I think all of the finalists who did that were chosen in classical rather than MT.

I think you can find the Theatre finalists from both 2011 and 2012 on YouTube to get a feel for what the judges liked those years.

I’d say the most important thing is to carefully read all requirements (don’t exceed time, etc.) and within those constraints choose whatever best showcases your unique talents.

Most of all, have fun putting together your tape and ideally get it done before you head back to school so you don’t get stuck paying for express mail.

Good luck everyone!!

@ MomCares: “Most of all, have fun putting together your tape and ideally get it done before you head back to school so you don’t get stuck paying for express mail.”

This is going to be a stupid question, I"m sure, but I guess this means the submissions are not electronic? I’d imagined they would be done electronically. So how do you record it? On CD? Could someone share the nuts and bolts procedure they used? That is, for an electronic submission, we’d just use our video camera, record it, upload it on to our computer, then submit. Do we do that but then just burn it onto a CD? Any tips? Much appreciated!

@connections - They may do submissions electronically now, like many of the newer pre-screens, but when D did it we had to burn the recording to a DVD and mail it.

Part of this may be because you marked everything with barcodes rather than names to keep applicants’ identities separate from their submissions.

Back in the olden days (2 years ago) we recorded with a video camera, transferred that to a computer, then burned a DVD. D found that recording the piano accompaniment first gave her better balance than recording singing with the live piano (and I think that’s what YoungArts recommended doing).

Btw… EVERY kid we knew who submitted D’s year (including D) sent it at the last minute and had to pay for overnight shipping. ;-D

Applications and submissions to YoungArts are due in mid October, so if you plan to submit for 2013, the time to do it has arrived.

[Our Program | YoungArts](Apply to the National Arts Competition | YoungArts)

Best of luck to everyone!!

Congratulations to everyone who has uploaded your YoungArts submission before tomorrow’s deadline! Our S uploaded his instrumental audition overnight last night and the system was already painfully slow (he had to upload 5 different pieces), so I’ll bet by now it’s really jamming up.

Good luck to all!!

My S uploaded his MT audition last week and we got an email the next day saying it had been received. He uploaded a dance audition last night, but we still haven’t gotten any email confirmation. I imagine you are right - the system is just overloaded, but I’d like to get the confirmation just so we can forget all about it and move on!

Thanks to the CC board for alerting us to Young Arts - I had never heard of it before!
