@ChoatieMom we have four kids so don’t worry, we obviously have figured it out!
Once our kids got older and started staying up later than my husband, well, we had to get creative. Fortunately, when he worked in an office, it was only five miles away and could come home during the day. And now he permanently works from home so… Separate bedtimes has never posed a problem in that regard!
@Poochie21 I think I do this writeup on cc a couple times a year, but I suspect nobody actually tries it. However, I can’t help writing it again. Here is my clinic’s instructions on how to take melatonin (not verbatim).
Take only pure melatonin, not something mixed with an unknown sleep aide or herbal remedy. Just melatonin. Make sure you have a good eight hours or more to sleep, otherwise don’t take it.
Start out with just one mg of melatonin. It should take about 30-60 min to kick in, so no problem if you take it a bit before going to bed. One mg will likely do very little, but some people can’t handle even that. They have dreams that are too intense and leave them feeling not rested. If you’re one of those unlucky people, don’t take it anymore.
Take that low dosage of one mg for three days and see how your body reacts. If it doesn’t help you sleep, up the dosage to two mg for three days, then three mg, etc. This is how you titrate. You have to experiment and figure out the correct dosage for you.
When you have figured out the proper dosage of melatonin, this is how it should feel. You should have dreamt, but not crazy disturbing dreams, you should feel rested in the morning, but not groggy. You might wake up at night, but then you go right back to sleep, you don’t stay awake for hours.
Too much melatonin will make you feel groggy. I take two mg because three makes me dream too intensely. My clinic is very pro melatonin, however, I don’t know if I would take large dosages even if I needed it, as there is some research indicating that’s not a good idea.
@busdriver11 - I saw your reply! I read it. Thank you! Melatonin question though-will it help me STAY asleep? Because I fall asleep fine, it’s just that I wake up in the middle of the night. And if there is a brand you recommend, I will check it out.
@Poochie21 I buy mine from the Longevity Medical Clinic, but there’s nothing special about it, any melatonin that is just plain melatonin with nothing added to it would be the same product. Likely you can get that on Amazon or a nutrition store.
With the right dosage, you should be able to fall asleep pretty quickly if you wake up in the middle of the night, it doesn’t keep you dead asleep like Ambien does, but it should prevent you from staying awake for hours if you waken. I wake up briefly a few times a night (my husband gets up to go to the bathroom), but I go right back to sleep as long as I’m not under a huge amount of stress.
