I am a third generation alum of the University (plus my dad was a professor there). I am posting to brag on the fact that the Bama co-ed cheerleading squad AND the all-girl cheerleading squad BOTH just won Nationals this past weekend. I have a good friend whose daughter is a freshman on the co-ed squad and she actually competed with them (usually freshmen do not compete), so that momma is flying high! It’s the first time a school has EVER had both a co-ed and an all-girl squad win Nationals. So Roll Tide!
I am not all that familiar with the sport of cheerleading but this stuff is amazing to me! Those athletes very obviously worked HARD to attain this level of strength, precision and expertise!
My son, a 2013 Bama grad, is in his first year of law school at UVA (which is one of the nation’s top 10 schools for law), He has landed eight different law internship interviews for the coming summer. Five are with firms in Birmingham.
DD was just informed that she and her group will present their project from the College of Nursing at the UA undergrad research conference and she’s been invited to join Phi Kappa Phi!
S to be recognized with a scholarship at the Measurement Science Conference March 18-20. Award stipulates that he pick up the check in person…in Anaheim, CA…so guess where he’s spending his Spring Break?! :-/
Son is continuing the work he did as an undergraduate CBH at Bama in his studies in biomedical engineering at UMinnesota for grad school. This summer, he will be continuing his research at the VA Hospital in Minneapolis, while working toward his masters degree. Could not be prouder of the work he is doing, and so proud of the young men and women that his research will help when they return home.
Why, thank you, whatever that means! But my point is, Bama can be a great starting point for those wishing to pursue graduate studies, even if they don’t have the major you are seeking for graduate work. Son is so grateful that he got his undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering, and for the wonderful research opportunities he got at Bama. He wouldn’t be where he is now without it!
Ski-U-Mah is the less impressive, far less pervasive Minnesota version of ‘Roll Tide’…
I’m a Minnesota alum & employee (and spouse of a 2nd generation Minnesota alum & employee). Our DS’s list for colleges currently is:
Minnesota
Alabama
(and maybe Chicago…)
Lots of pride in Minnesota here, but with a real strong interest in 'Bama for my son… In fact, went to a college fair last night SOLELY for the chance to meet and chat with the recruiter for Alabama. Seriously.
So, I’ll leave it to the 'Bama grads to give you the ‘Roll Tide’ cheer, but wanted to congratulate your son from the other side as well. And it is reassuring to us as parents to see confirmation of Alabama’s academic credentials.
Montegut: Glad to see your son is enjoying his graduate work. It will have an impact on so many lives.
My son called the other night to say that he and a fellow UVA Law classmate accepted summer internships from one of the big Birmingham firms. He’s quite excited to be returning “home” for six or seven weeks. Now, he is looking into getting housing for that short period of time. Then, once he finishes the internship, he returns to UVA to do research for one of the law school professors. The gentleman was quite taken with his strong economics/math background that was polished at Alabama.
DS is a junior (for a few more days) in electrical engineering. He interned last summer for a local defense contractor in NY. He helped create a component of a radar device that identifies aircraft as friend or foe. That company just announced a big contract to build and deliver the device to the Navy. Someday his small role might help protect us from the enemy, or avoid a friendly fire disaster.
