My D joined the Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society. While at the induction ceremony on April 1 she received a scholarship from them. What a nice surprise!

Congrats!!!

^^^congrats…so did mine and it was a nice surprise!

My D will be at a 12 week REU at UCF. She will be one of 10 students doing research. Bonus: She gets paid. I just can’t get over all of the good things that have come her way.

Thanks for posting the NSF REU website M2CK.

Congratulations to all of the other students!!!

Oh, that is so awesome! I really want to visit UCF and was really hoping son could do an REU there. Hope your daughter enjoys it!

Montegut: Thank you, she is very excited.

D will be a Congressional intern on Capital Hill this summer. She is so excited, and looking forward to spending time in DC.

How awesome! I’m sure she’ll enjoy the experience and learn so much!

Cuttle…congrats to your D! Yes, they get paid!

Catfan: Congratulations to your D!!!

Would you tell us a little bit about the opportunity? A friend’s son may want to try for a DC internship next summer.

Thanks M2CK. My D actually did not know she would be paid!

I heard my name mentioned in this thread, so I’d thought I’d pop in So many wonderful things going on! I’ve got so many friends who have won or been selected for things it is kinda crazy. Almost everyone I know has fabulous summer plans cooked up, from interning in DC to exotic islands, to summer school in Denmark or an REU at Bama. Now if I can just survive finals and make friends in Tampa, everything will be a-okay.

Hi Mesquite_Girl, long time, no see!

Congratulations on the Goldwater and Hollings scholarship!! Hope you enjoy your time at NOAA.

Roll Tide!!!

Haha thanks!! CC can be very addictive, what with all the wonderful forums and threads to answer, so I kinda cut myself off during the school year. But I guess I’m slowly making my way back on.

^^^Mesquite, you’ll love the Tampa/St. Pete/Clearwater area. Sent you a PM.

We’re still waiting on summer plans, but I have to brag that my son is finishing his second semester as an engineering major.

May not seem like a lot to the superstars here, but a lot of his friends have dropped out/dropped classes/changed majors.

I am so proud of him sticking in there, not dropping a single course, no matter how hard it’s been, and making good grades to boot!

Give your kids a huge pat on the back for even the “smallest” of achievements!

montegut - second year, not second semester. : ) good for him!

Thanks Montegut!! Staying in engineering is no small feat, he should be proud!! Only about 20% of people I know who started in engineering have stuck with it.

Yes, he is finishing his second semester, second year, in engineering.

Although I think finishing your second semester, first year of engineering is a major accomplishment, too!

In fact, any kid that makes it into their second semester, any major, should be proud!

Wishing all your kids a lot of luck as they finish this semester and hope they have a wonderful summer, whatever they’re doing!

Hi Mesquite-

Just wanted to offer my congrats like the rest of the parents. You were very helpful to me a few years ago when my son was considering Alabama. He has made it through the first year as an aerospace major and done great. Loves everything about Bama, especially the band. Best of luck to you in the future. I’m sending you a PM.

Time to chime in. Son will be doing his REU in Chem E at Duke this summer.

He’s had a blast and hopes to finish his freshman year with a good GPA. Organic Chem is presenting the greatest challenge to that (as it should…). He has had many opportunities and is lovin’ life in Tuscaloosa! I am so thankful for all the help we’ve received on this board.

Congrats to your son with this REU opportunity. :)

And, yes, Orgo is a challenge! Oh my!

Loring: That is fantastic news! Congratulations to your S!

M2CK: Do students ever do the same REU for the next year? Is that ever/never done?
