Your Freshman Experience?

For those of you who've already been through your first year at McGill, can you describe what it was like, particularly in the first half of the year as you're getting used to everything.

Think about, settling in, first day of class, making friends, first McGill parties, etc.

Frosh = fun fun fun. If you're not 18 yet by the time you enter school and you want to drink during frosh, make sure to make some arrangements. ;-)

What do you mean by "arrangements"? My impression of the city when I visited that the drinking age wasn't strictly enforced there as long as you look around 18 or older. I know I'll need to be in custody of the dean, but a previous post made it sound like it didn't m ake much of a difference. Oh, and I heard that most clubs aren't too strict about it either as long as you're close, huh?

Frosh events are organized by student orgs, which have to check your id/age to give you either an underage bracelet or a normal bracelet (which you'll wear during the days of the frosh to get into all the events and etc...so...yeah...I hope you get what I mean now). Custody of the dean means nothing.

What type of events?

Also, I mean...that wouldnt affect just the normal dorm parties :-0, right?

Drinking events: bar hopping, clubs, beer tents on lower field, open air pub, power hour....etcetcetc
Other: Scavenger hunt, white water rafting, La Ronde Six Flags...etc
It all changes yearly with the organizers.

Dorm parties: I hope you can figure this kinda stuff out yourself.

Haha, of course. The way you mentioned it, it sounded as if being 17 for the beginning of the year would be a big damper in social activities. But whatever...it's funny because parties here in Chicago are pretty good, even with the hypothetical underage drinking. So...there, where alcohol is easier to get, the girls are allegedly more attractive...haha, it'll be a good time I'm sure.

Bars and Clubs have started to inforce the 18+ drinking age they'll ask just about everyone for ID now even if you look like your 30, the reason is because several of them have been given fines by the police.

Sigh. It wouldn't really bother much, I mean I've gone nearly 18 years here without being able to legally drink, but I imagine it'll be frustrating to have friends that are able to go to bars and clubs, and not being able to myself (at least for a month or two)

I'm not sure you should generalize. If a large group comes in with one or two dubious looking people (such as, say, asian girls who have a tendency to look younger than they are), they will probably card everyone. That or you're sticking too much to the anglo side of town, and those places tend to get more of those American and Ontarian tourists who drink like teenagers discovering alcohol*...

*does not apply to all 18-21 tourists from those region who come to visit, but there is a noticeable portion of them who visit just to abuse the legal drinking age

they really only card during frosh week- its no problem otherwise.

yeah you are right Blobof i was mostly referring to the general downtown area i don't know how it is on Saint-Laurent and even Saint-Denis.

I wouldn't worry about it too much ...

Yeah I've noticed that too... Or maybe it's because it's all warm and touristy again...it gets so much more slack when it's cold lol :-D

nah from what i've heard a lot bars and clubs have been getting visits from the police during their business hours and giving fines if their are underage people inside so they've been cracking down on it.

But again, police raids also don't seem to happen much during the winter. There's a lot more underage drinking during the summer/spring (thanks to American spring breaks) with the schools out et all

What about academics and things like that

^Haha, you're silly.
