My S always bought his texts & read some online at no or low charge. He always made money by selling them back for more than he paid purchasing them in the 1st place. No idea if D has ANY books and how she is managing them as cinema tends to require more “other materials” and fees.

^Nope, all business is taking care by half.com. I believe that assumption is that tax is included in a price. She does not an income, so she is not paying taxes. She does not collect shipping either. We just ship whatever the cost. It makes sense when some of them are selling for $40, $80, if you do not want to keep them. It makes no sense to sell $10 book on internet.

Not MiamiDap but I sell my kids textbooks and other stuff all the time on half.com and amazon. I have never dealt with sales tax. I don’t think the IRS cares about folks selling a dozen or so books a year.

I also go with the $10 cutoff. If it isn’t worth at least that much I just donate it.

This is applicable to NY residents, but your state should have a similar page explaining when sales taxes are due (or not):

[Sales From Your Home](Sales From Your Home)

She’s done that also, but the time and effort and guessing if the book is going to sell is a bit of a hassle. Fortunately, she’s a humanities major so her books don’t cost as much as Math/Science books. My husband, an engineer, still has his books from college. I think they cost so darn much he still doesn’t want to toss them.

Walmart.com had a 5 pack of composition books on sale for $0.40. When I saw it, I thought it might be a mistake, but my site-to-store went through without a hitch. I order 10 packs, 50 composition books total, to donate to the elementary school that serves a low income population. When I got to the store to pick my order up, they brought out 10 notebooks. I showed them the receipt that clearly stated that I had ordered 10 packs of 5 assorted colors. The lady helping me called for back up and the manager said it was a coice of one of the 5 pieces. Nope, clearly stated on the receipt 5 pieces. Called another manager who said it was an error on the site but they would honor it. So, I got 50 composition books for $4.24. I left Walmart and when straight to the school, they were thrilled to get them. That was a good buy!

Those bad ladies over on the Dressing Young thread made me buy shoes, a jacket and a dress this morning. All at great prices but I really, really don’t need them!! I had a 20% off coupon that came out of the blue for endless from Amazon and someone posted that she’d bought a jacket on sale at Boden. Checked out the jacket and naturally I wanted it too. (Actually both the dress and the jacket were things I had coveted at full price.) There is a sale on plus free shipping and returns.

The advice we have from the lighting store is to have the chandelier professionally cleaned every 18 months to two years. The cost is $150.

The height/width of the chandelier is a lot to noodle thru. Our dining room is large but the ceiling is not super high – eight feet. It took a while to find just the right size of chandelier with enough width for the room but not so much height that it would hang too low. Again, the chandelier man who helped us was invaluable.

It’s still really pretty! I’m not a jewelry person. This is my first sparkly acquisition that gives me a lot of pleasure.

I love the chandelier!!

My good buy–I was dropping off items at a thrift store, and looked around in their “antiques” section. Bought a beautiful bowl with blue flowers made by an English company ($20). I showed it to someone who use to have an antique shop. Turns out it truly is a Victorian antique. She showed me other items from this company, all priced $100 plus.

Second find. I went to Costco to buy more of their Sweet Tea vodka, and price reduced to $13. I like this drink so much that my goal was to buy and bring to 2 parties this weekend, but at $13 I bought 4 extras. Of course, not everyone will like sweet tea flavor. It was a big seller in the South, but Costco is discontinuing the line.

Home Depot is having an Overstock Sale for Labor Day Weekend. Lots of amazing deals on lighting ($85 fixtures down to $25) with free shipping. I bought some wood blinds for my bedroom at 50% with free shipping to replace the cheap plastic shades my Dh has been complaining about for the last 10 years lol.

kathiep,
“She’s done that also, but the time and effort and guessing if the book is going to sell is a bit of a hassle.”

-Not at all, not at half.com I even added some of my books because it was so easy to do and very fast. I do not think that I will ever sell them. But why not, if it is so easy. D. has sold only 2 books though, but they were the only ones worthwhile to sell, $45 and $85. Even if we do not sell any more, it is OK. I am not familiar with rent, maybe it make sense in some situation. It just D. is never sure which ones she would want to keep. And, even buying on half. com get expansive. I believe, she has just spend over $500, but she said they will last for first 2 years of Med. School. Well, as you know this is really nothing in comparison to tuition anyway.

MiamiDAP, Not trying to sidetrack this great thread, but half.com is where I’ve sold the textbooks and while it’s very easy, oftentimes they do not sell and then you have a pile of books that you can’t donate, i.e. get rid of because you are hoping they sell. This is not such a big deal for us, we have a big house, but our daughter is usually in a small apartment, a day’s drive from us and keeping books around that are not wanted is something she and we don’t need. I work at a library that has a book sale room. I already have more books then I should.
Just ask my husband!

Back on track - Anyone know of discount places on-line for organic pest control?

Can you clarify what you are looking for, kathiep?

katthiep,
Agree. Forgot to mention that I am shipping books, they are at our house, Yes, D’s space (tiny studio) and time (no spare in Med. School) would not allow her to do so. So, we are on the same page. I do not think we will sell more, but it does not hurt to keep them for another year, then we will donate.

Just for some comfort I mention that when my older one got into upper division courses his professors usually worked off just articles form journals or reprints of chapters from books. The days of the really expensive text books drew to a close. Printing costs sometimes but much less of a hit than text books.

FWIW, both my kids tend to hold on to many of their textbooks. And they do seem to actually use them. I wouldn’t insist on selling all of them.

"got into upper division courses his professors usually worked off just articles form journals or reprints of chapters from books. "

-In science classes? in Genetics, Physiology, Cell Bio, Orgo? None of profs at D’s UG and Med. School are doing that. Yes, they have some current publications to read in addition but not instead of textbooks.

Got THE $200 shirt from Nordie’s with free shipping. Paid $118 plus tax . :)

Walked into CVS to buy something for DH. They had quite a few things 75% off at our local store. I don’t know if all stores have similar things on clearance.

Items that I saw at 75% off were lots of summer items: (flip flops, various folding chairs, charcoal and lighter fluid, beach towels, plastic bowls/plates/tumblers, kid’s toys). They also had some candy 75% off, and a huge variety of women’s cosmetics (various items and brands). Additionally, lots of cute children’s toys and not just for summer (ie: saw some Barbie, Mr. Potato Head, Crayola, trucks and cars, etc.).

notheastmom - You are always snagging good deals at CVS!

Reminder to parents of college students… [drugstore.com Online Pharmacy - Prescription Drugs, Health and Beauty, plus more](<a href=“Walgreens: Pharmacy, Health & Wellness, Photo & More for You”>http://www.drugstore.com/) offers free shipping on orders over $25 and offers a discount for first time users - just do a quick google search. My freshman son has a slight cold and his bookstore only sold pocket packs of tissues. They were a do-able price here and when I added the forgotten contact wash and a couple of little things I hit the buy button!
