Your Good Buy Of The Day (Part 1)

Check out Groupon round up today, there are several cities offering Southwest discounts to Vegas.

Mamom. I have Bearpaw boots which are cheaper versions of Ugg style boots. I spray then with a waterproofing something or another and wear them even when it’s wet. Since they are only $60 or $70 a pair, I don’t worry about them getting wet. My DD’s Uggs are here…they are five years old and the only boots she owned…ok…so she wore them mostly in CA but did wear them here in the snow too at Christmas.

They are boots…and they are warm.

Just an FYI…DS went to BU…never OWNED a pair of boots. We regularly saw students in flip flops outdoors even in the winter (and we were there at least once a month to see concerts). Just saying!

Thumper, I plan on spraying the Uggs with waterproofing, thanks for the reminder to go ahead and do it. It is now on my shoppng list.

My S hasn’t owned snow boots in several years, but he will wear construction boots. I laugh when I see the college (and high school) kids skimpily dresses in cold snowly weather.

D got a great pair of North Face boots two years ago - end of year sale so a great price. Check Sierra Trading and Zappos. She absolutely loves them and she finds very few shoes comfortable. Sorel is another good brand. Ugg’s makes some good looking winter boots - as opposed to the classic bedroom slipper Ugg - but I think you can find comparable boots for a lot less.

fishymom, your D must be so cold since she came from Florida. I’m sure the natives are just finally breaking out their coats.

I used to work outdoors and someone told me that when you buy long underwear, make sure it has some wool in it. Much warmer than cuddleduds which are nice but not as warm as my wool ones. Smartwool is another great brand and I think their stuff is really warm. They have a few pieces on sale at 6pm and they have free shipping right now.

Some pointers. Buy stuff that blocks the wind. Wear socks, gloves and hats. Smartwool socks are expensive but really nice to wear outdoors. She can buy gloves and hats that block the wind. A North Face Denali is a nice heavy jacket but it doesn’t block the wind. Put a shell over it. I have a Patagonia Retro X which is much warmer than a Denali because it has windstopper or something like that. If she’s still cold try a scarf, you have to have something around your neck, it will keep her much warmer.

Good luck.

Laxmom, I JUST got finished using that B and N code to buy a gift! I always look for these special codes/deals at B and N and use them to buy “wanted” DVD’s for Christmas gifts!

I can’t wear wool at all (makes my skin crawl…and I break out in hives). Silk underwear is also very warm, and not bulky. Campmore usually has it.

The ONE brand of warm wool that ISN’T ITCHY is icebreakers. It is comfy and warm, yet thin enough to be worn under clothing. My SIL recommended it after seeing many use it on a trip to Antartica. It’s surprisingly comfortable (normally, I find wool itchy too). It also can be machine-washed in cold water. I loaned it to my mom for a trip she has to Canada (she gets cold easily). Some of the synthetics are also pretty warm, and I sometimes wear them under the icebreakers to stay nice & toasty, even in cold weather when traveling.

Costco carries an Ugg-like boot, but I had to return the black ones because the dye rubbed off onto other things. Didn’t have that trouble with the lighter colors.

Ugh makes waterproof boots. They have a nylon-y looking leg and leather foot. They’re very warm, truly waterproof, but not the dream feel you get with a traditional Ugg boot.

Reactions to wool are very individual. Some people can wear Merino (a fine wool breed of sheep). I can wear coarser wool sweaters, with a cotton turtleneck underneath, for several hours. I know if it’s going to be a very long day, I’ll start to itch. Never had trouble with wool in shoes

I can’t wear any kind of wool…not even the finest merino wool. I can feel it if there is 1% wool in a garment.

That being said…there are some wonderful alternatives. Maybe we should start another thread on warm weather gear.

The HH’s “engineered wool” that I have has polypropylene material on the inside and some wool on the outside, so wool never really touches the skin. I like these baselayers a lot.

Fishymom–you won’t go wrong with the Lululemon tights. I’ve found that the company’s clothes wear well. I’ve had a pair of workout pants for almost 3 years now. My oldest D teaches pilates (very part-time basis–she’s doing a full-time MBA program). The only reason she teaches (not that she doesn’t appreciate the money) is because people in the fitness field (yoga, pilates, personal training, etc.) get a nice discount on the Lululemon clothing.

Thought I posted this yesterday–but looks like it didn’t go through. I got a really great buy this weekend–3 pairs of women’s Sperry Topsider boat shoes. End of season clearance. Got all three for $90. Normally, the shoes are $50-75 each.

Bromfield: where did you find that great deal on topsiders?

Tees by Tina makes a fabulous pair of leggings. One size fits all. Comfortable. Goes all the way to the ankle. Perfect on my skinny 5’8" dd and perfect on me (5’5"). We love them. The camis are great too. Also one-size-fits-all and long enough to really cover the hips. I also like lululemon a lot. I actually think Tees by Tina gives them a run for their money.

sewhappy, I’m going to order some of those tights, but I will reserve them for dressier occasions. The only thing at Lululemon I find worth the money is their bras.

NYC shoppers, get ready for some bargains (if you like Gap and Zara-like clothing):

[UNIQLO Opening frst US store](http://www.uniqlo.com/us/)

Land’s End Canvas (online) is having a Fall Sale. I ordered a flannel shirt for my H–
originally $49.50 for $16.99.

My DDs have lulus from nearly 10 years ago, they still look great.

Thank you all for the great advice! And I am so sorry, I really didn’t mean to hijack this thread, it is one of my favorites on CC.

Now for my good buy, I mentioned earlier my great weekend buys at J. Crew. Well now they have 30% off sale items on line also! Today is the last day.

Local sports store (not one of the chains) in a resort area–don’t know if other dealers are discounting their Sperrys. It is the end of the season, so there might be sales.

Re Tights: I ordered the Tina Tee tights and also two camis. They looked nice. I’m always looking for reasonably priced camis and tees. I find that even the more expensive ones don’t last that long. After a while, I find little tiny holes in the fabric right near the hem on the bottom. Been trying to figure it out forever.
