Did I hear somewhere that Sym’s and Feline’s were closing down and liquidated their stock? Should be some great bargins if so. Use the Sym’s charge card and save 5%.

^^^ Oops, ok no catty comments. :-)

^ Filene’s Basement is in bankruptcy and is going out of business for good this time. No more Running of the Brides!

Filene’s (not to be confused with Filene’s Basement) hasn’t existed by that name for 5 years or so.

Didn’t hear anything about Sym’s.

Sym’s is the parent company of Filene’s Basement.

I was sad to hear Filene’s is closing. I was delighted to shop at the famous store once (years ago) while visiting Boston…got a pair of waterproof boots.

^^^ agree, mommusic. I grew up in western MA, but as kids we went (with our parents) to Boston about once a month for my Mom’s doctor appointments. Filene’s was usually part of a lot of those trips – and the infamous basement was always where we went first.

Oh no. I hope this isn’t the case. I’m hoping someone will come in and rescue The Basement, once again.

As for Syms, yes, all stores are closing.

Oh no…I love Syms…guess I better go and check out clothes for the guys in the family. We’ve gotten great suit deals there over the years.

The flagship Filense basement in Boston has been closed for a few years, the remaining stores never operated like a true basement store with the markdowns or the selection. I remember when my now 11yo D was around 3yo H took her to the basement and she picked out a tiara for me as an xmas present. :)

I haven’t lived in Boston in many years so I didn’t realize the flagship basement was closed. Too bad. In my younger, poorer days I bought most of my working wardrobe there. I had a college friend who came from a family of 11 girls. One time her mother happened to be at was on Washington St when she realized the bridal sale was going on. She stopped in and picked up 2 designer wedding dresses. I think the dresses were about $100 each. She figured out of 11 daughters, the dresses would probably get used.

Here is my recollection from a LONG time ago at Filenes downtown basement. There were actually a couple of basements…and the BOTTOM one was where the best bargains were found. My best was a dress I found but it was missing the belt and that belt would have been impossible to match. My friend found the belt on the opposite side of the basement…it was an omen. Folks used to try clothes on in the aisles and I remember more than one “dispute” when more than one person found an item.

I recall going to the flagship Filenes on our honeymoon. H was aghast & fascinated, watching old women strip down & try on clothing without benefit of dressing rooms in the basement. We bought some bedding there at amazingly low prices. I also hadn’t known the flagship closed down.

Have been to a store branded Filenes in DC near the Willard Hotel that seemed more like a Ross. We bought some gloves, scarves & socks, as well as some other clothing & jackets, since it was colder in DC than we had projected. Prices were good but not AMAZING & selection varied.

SOOOO happy! Just bought D’s plane ticket to come home for Christmas. Was told by friends to expect sky high fares. Bought it last night & was pleasantly surprised that it was not as high as I had feared–under $700. Several friends had to pay about $500/direction for their kiddos to come home to HI for Christmas. Am waiting to see if travel agent can help us book D an inexpensive flight to fly LAX to & from SFO for Thanksgiving. Am NOT holding my breath, but can always hope.
