Your Good Buy Of The Day (Part 1)

Free searches this weekend… of the 1930 census at [Genealogy, Family Trees & Family History Records at Ancestry.com](http://www.ancestry.com/)

Thanks Treatopleaf. That was fun! I looked up my grandparents and their siblings. Learned the name of my grandfather’s disabled sister, who died young. I’m second generation on both sides so genealogy isn’t something I’ve ever tried to do, but since everyone was here in the U.S. by 1930, it was entertaining to look them up. :)

Thanks for that! I found my dad’s family census record  That was cool especially because when I was looking at the neighbor names I remember hearing them in stories over the years.

I had it free for a month last year. I have my grandparents ship records, census records and draft registration cards…it was nice to see but I didn’t have the knowledge to do a deeper search. I have a friend that took years and traced his tree back to the Mayflower!

My history-buff sister loves this stuff, but sadly she couldn’t go past 1870s, I think. There was a fire that burned up all the census and the trail died. :(

I agree with HImom about Paypal (post 3840). It’s just another source of funds for Ebay. No benefit to you.

Not at all sure why you say that. I’ve only had really bad experiences with Paypal and will only buy something on Ebay if I can do my transaction without having to use that lousy card.

I have purchased with credit card via PayPal when that is the only way vendor will sell. I still get my CC protections and it makes me happier. Do NOT like or trust PayPal, tho S is a fan of theirs.

Huh? PayPal has a card? I just use my AmEx with PayPal. I have only had one dispute. When I notified PayPal, they handled it like a credit card co. handles a dispute. The vendor refunded my money immediately. What problems have you had with PayPal?

I’ve never had a problem with PayPal. I always use it when it is offered. They have an option now that the money won’t be withdrawn until after the item has arrived.

My daughter did a fundraiser last year so she could go to an expensive summer program and I’m sure using PayPal was the reason she was able to raise most of the money. Many people commented on how much easier it was than writing a check and mailing it.

There are many many horror stories of PayPal from the seller’s side.

From the buyer’s side, it seems to be ok if you use a credit card. I would never give them access to a bank account.

One thing to remember, is that PayPal is the merchant of record for everything you buy when you use a credit card. So if something goes wrong, and PayPal doesn’t give you satisfaction, you can dispute the transaction with your credit card company, and they will ding PayPal.

At the “M” store. Saw a wool and alpaca coat for $169, down from $425. Today it was online for $49.99. When I went back to the store in town to grab it, they gave me another 15% off! Great wine color!

All the Coach bags, (including the new ones for Spring) that are not part of the President Day’s sale, will be 25% off if bought today or tomorrow, but not picked up until the 23 - same with all the sale bags - an additional 25% off if not picked up till the 23.

Interesting comments on paypal…I’ve been buying things on and off from ebay for 8 years or so and have never had a problem with paypal. In fact, I love the ease of use. I’ve only had one problem with a seller from, if I remember correctly, Poland for a low price item that I chose not to pursue. Now I only buy from people selling items in the US. I’m sure there are many items coming from outside the US that wouldn’t present a problem but that was how I decided to deal with my disappointment/frustration with that one missing item. I agree with others that buying from someone with lots of positive feedback and a very high rating is key.

I had a long horror story with paypal based on someone using my accuont fraudulently and the funds coming from my bank account. When you set up your paypal they will ask for your bank information so you can be a “verified” customer. Some sellers won’t sell to you unless you are verified. I ended up closing my paypal account and started a new one with credit card only. I can’t buy from some sellers but I don’t care. I never want to go through the hassle I had with them again.
I believe my problem occurred because I hadn’t used my paypal account in a while. Someone in Germany used it without my knowledge. It took weeks to get my money back. If I had needed it to pay rent/mortgage or bills I would have been screwed.

I use Paypal frequently, but I won’t link it to my bank account. If some vendors won’t sell to me, that’s ok.

I take Mom2M’s approach. I have never had a vendor refuse to sell to me. I use paypal pretty frequently and in many cases will choose it over giving some online website I don’t know that well my credit card number.

I think that just like many things, PayPal has worked some of their kinks out over time. I stayed away for several years but finally hooked up to it with a CC - would never do a bank account hookup. All smooth sailing so far. I like the monthly statement they sent now as well.

My bank gave me a free checking account for use exclusively with PayPal. Neither they nor me wanted to use my “real” account for online purposes. I’ve been using PayPal hooked up to this extra account for years without problems.

That’s a good solution if you need it, collegekidsmom. So far, I haven’t had any issues (just use a credit card).

The Lands End section of my local Kmart was happy a huge special today: an additional 75% off all Lands End clearance items. Wow!

^I bought these pants in Khaki color for $8.75.

I am not sure who it was that was looking for a GPS - but Staples has the Garmin Nuvi 40LM GPS on sale this week for 90$. A great deal!
