Your Good Buy Of The Day (Part 1)

I can tell! Netbooks are wonderful.

We are picking up our Ikea bedframe tonight that we are buying from a Craigslist posting. $50 dollars, and it would have been $180 if we bought it directly from Ikea.

We are in the process of moving from Chicago to Tampa and quickly realized that it would be at least $2000 to move our stuff across the country, so we decided to buy stuff here.

It’s really surprising what you can buy on Craigslist. Our king size bedframe was $200, and it would have been $430 at Ikea.

We bought coffee tables (3) for $160. They are brand new. We bought them from a local furniture dealer who buys overstocks.

Toaster? 5 bucks. Lamps? $40 for 2. Full size mattress? $150, after we told the mattress store guy that we had seen them at the Flea market for $150.

Brand new never used high quality couch and loveseat? $800 at a local furniture shop ( not the name brand kind of store- you can’t get the best deals there.) I’m actually regretting that purchase a bit because we could have done better.

The only thing we paid full price for, and it was still on sale, was our king size mattress. I would never buy a used mattress. Even that was on sale for $450 at Sears.

I’m hoping that we can furnish the entire apartment for under $2500. I think we will make it . All we need is a dresser drawer for the guest bedroom and a dining room set, and with all the deals on Craigslist I think we can get both for the the $500 or so I have left in my budget.

Very satisfying. If you have patience, you can find very nice things on Craigslist.

Did you sell all the Chicago stuff? That would help you with expenses as well, if you’re planning on giving up your place there and free you of too much in the way of possessions which you have to pay to store.

Hi HImom. We sold much of our Chicago furniture to our friends that are renting the house, and we are going to let them use the lawn mower and snow blower, so I don’t have to worry about selling those.

I’ve had 2 garage sales and could probably do one more small one. It’s crazy how much stuff we had in that house!

It’s just so easy to accummulate “stuff.” So much of is it “perfectly good” until we’re all bursting at the gills. My brother & SIL are so great about getting rid of things. They give it to SIL’s mom, who donates the stuff to those in need & keeps things from building up. I wish I had their willpower & organizational skills. My home looks like a warehouse :frowning: I’m lucky hubby is a good sport. The carport can’t be parked in because he has decades of stuff from his late parents & others who have been gone for many, many years.

maybe buy him a copy of…

the boomer burden:dealing with your parents’ lifetime accumulation of stuff

i saw this in the bookstore…looks like an interesting book…

selling some of the stuff will maybe put money in your pocket :)

i recently sold some furniture just sitting in storage in the basement. what a good feeling to have the cash and to be rid of the furniture.

Got a $10 off card in the mail from Kohl’s last week. While perusing the the jewelry clearance rack, I found a Napier necklace (orig. price $33) on clearance for 10.20.
Used my gift card and got it for less than .50.

Ordered all but one of S2’s textbooks online. Got five books for $114 including shipping…a huge savings over the school bookstore.

Hawaiian Airlines has a 10% off coupon (needs to be signed up for on their website) good for flights to HI originating in WA, OR and Northern CA. It is valid for travel Sept -March 1st with Christmas break being the only balckout. Time to stimulate HIMom’s state economy!

I can promise NO SNOW to anyone who decides to visit our lovely state, except if you really want to work at it & rent a 4-wheeled drive vehicle & go up to some of our peaks where they actually DO have snow – sometimes.

I had a $10 coupon to JC Penney (not sure why but they sometimes just show up in the mail) Sandals were 75% off so I got a pair that were originally $40 marked down to $10 and with the coupon - free!

I get those JCP coupons too - the one thing I HATE about them though is that they EXCLUDE so many items/brands!!! No cookware, no Levi’s, no this or that - yikes! Once I walked around the store for 1/2 hour trying to find something I needed and COULD buy!

I bought socks with the last one!

Amazon has a deal on college hoodies and t-shirts for lots of State U’s for today. [Gold Box: College Sweatshirt and T-Shirt Combo Set for…](http://www.amazon.com/gp/goldbox/discussion/A3KGLXB60OQE0P/ref=xs_gb_A3KGLXB60OQE0P?pf_rd_p=441937901&pf_rd_s=right-1&pf_rd_t=701&pf_rd_i=20&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=11W1PGK53QARPTK7HXKX) $23 for both, add something else for a couple of bucks and you’ll get free shipping!

I received that Kohl’s coupon also. I found some nightwear that was originally $26 on sale for a little under $10 = free.

I went over to L&T (it’s Lord and Taylor for some of you) at lunch time today. They are still having their clearance. I got D2 a pink sweater from Lacoste, originally $135, marked down to 100, 50% off off 100, then 20% off coupon, it came to $40.

My girls love American Apparel hoodies. There are bulk resellers on ebay that sell the $42 hoodies for less than $20 each. They are perfect quality, available in all sizes, all colors. The seller I’ve used is HarringtonOutlets. We also bought Hunter boots for half price. Although they were seconds, they too were perfect quality.

A good buy for us anyway!

D who will be a junior and in an apt. this year was “needing” a tv - we did not want to spend alot of $$$$ on one, but she has always enjoyed a Seinfeld fix (or something else) before bed. We considered giving her one of ours - a 27 inch behema, which my husband DID NOT want to haul and which we would probably have replaced with a new TV for at least $400.

Stopped at Goodwill to look for a TV - instead found a super nice TV cart - solid oak, glass doors, perfect condition and perfect size - $20!!! No TV at Goodwill so went home and looked on Craigslist and within an hour my husband picked up a 2005 tv/vcr/dvd 20 inch set for $50! So…entire package $70 and now we don’t have to buy a DVD seperately! Best yet, it all works!!

This was our first Craigslist purchase.

Fiestaware is on sale at JCPenny. I needed to purchase a wedding present and was able to buy several of the baking dishes and the hostess set saving about 40%, so I added a tablecloth (saved over 50% on that). If you need a solid color tablecloth they are a reasonably good deal.

abasket—D sold off all of her furnishings at her undergrad U on Craigslist and bought all her furnishings in her new grad apartment on Craigslist. Strangely enough the she ended up about $50 ahead. A heck of a lot cheaper than hauling that stuff 800 miles. We love Craigslist. But just beware ---- we do cash only transactions due to all the scammers frequenting the site.

We love Craigslist too , for buying and selling. The only other caution I would add for selling is to not list your address or phone number on the ad itself- let them e-mail you, see if they seem serious and “real” before giving them your info.

We also prefer S to be the one doing the wheeling & dealing on Craigslist rather than D since there are some “sketchy” people who prowl it. S has gotten some amazing deals on it & is happy to be the point person. D hasn’t had much experience with it & we have none so far. My friend has gotten many of the tenants in rooms she lets out in her house via Craigslist.
