an applicant has a plethora of Cs, and a couple of Ds and Fs during one of his semesters during Sophomore year...

but his overall stats turn out to be:

Unweighted GPA = 3.35
Weighted GPA = 4.25

SAT = High 1300s

Good SATs

National AP Scholar

Very accelerated in math.. (taking high level math in college junior+senior year)

Good ECs..
Several Small Awards...

Does this applicant have a chance at UNC???

Applicant is instate and all of his bad marks are 1 SEMESTER.. the rest of the semesters are really good..

And the only excuse he has for the bad marks is:
-English as foreign language
-Lots of Stress when first entering AP program
-Trouble concentrating in class..

Do you think the applicant has a good shot for acceptance or probable rejection?

Also the applicants Class Rank is 20% when most of UNC's students are in top 10%..
Will being in the most competitive school in the State help..
4.25 Weighted GPA is only Top 20% at the school

you're instate but D and Fs are a little too harsh. Also do you mean taking Calc BC in your junior year? If you mean that it isn't very accelerated. It may at your own school, but in general not that accelerated. Also how you have a W 4.25 and UW 3.25? What's your scale? Did you like take 11 APs and get As this semester?
I don't think you'll be accepted because state schools put more emphasis on numbers and stats. Unless you have something really fantastic no I don't think you have much of a chance.

It would probably depend on what college or major you were applying to. Also English as second language might help a lot. Did you take any TOFEl or whatever the foreign language tests are? Or are those for internationally based? and BC during Junior year? That sounds accelerated to me. The highest only reached calc 1 (or AB) at my school. Gluck.

no.. I didn't take TOEFL.
i am doing SAT..
I was in the US long enough to not be qualfied for Toefl, but still not good at english.. Language not spoken at home..

Well, UNC does take 57% of its in state applicants, so you would have some chance, especially if the Ds and Fs are back in sophomore year.

That said, lots of Cs, particularly as a junior and senior, will look bad. I know of a guy who applied in state this year with a 1450 and got waitlisted, and his grades were low but none were in the D-F range. Good scores on AP exams should compensate for this some, though.

You're not out of the running at UNC, but you definitely need to go full-tilt the rest of the way. Duke is very unlikely.
