Hi everyone, I just have a quick question. Unfortunately, I won’t be able to finish my IGETC by the end of Spring 2020, I will be missing a language course to finish my major preps. Will that affected my chances? Also, I don’t think my CC offers the Partial IGETC…
If the missing course is not one that is otherwise required, then you would not be automatically disqualified from admission.
But you would have to complete general education requirements at the UC or CSU without the benefit of IGETC to fulfill some of them (but individual courses taken at CC may cover some of those requirements).
You didn’t mention the UC you’re aiming for. If it’s Berkeley’s L&S they require full IGETC and will not accept partial. If you checked IGETC in the application that’s the path you’ve chosen. And the gen ed for L&S is even more language than IGETC requires.
You don’t have two years of high school
Language? That will fulfill IGETC.
In that case you can do Partial. I’ve never heard of a CCC not allowing Partial. It’s part of the UC-CCC IGETC options. I think they have to allow it, but again it will reject you from Berkeley’s L & S.
https://admissions.berkeley.edu/transfer-admissions-information-by-college indicates that, for UCB L&S, one of the following is required for admission:
- The entire IGETC pattern of courses, available only to students transferring directly from a California, community college. Consult your community college for details.
- College of Letters and Science requirements (see assist.org for more information): Reading and Composition, Quantitative Reasoning, Foreign Language
- University of California Reciprocity Agreement (available to transfers from another UC campus)
The L&S foreign language requirement can be satisfied without IGETC as described at https://ls.berkeley.edu/foreign-language .
Note that if you are admitted to UCB L&S without IGETC or UC reciprocity, you need to complete the L&S 7-course breadth after transfer (though some of your transfer course work could fulfill some categories): https://ls.berkeley.edu/advising/degree-requirements
The problem is if he can’t get language completed for IGETC he cannot complete the language for L&S breadth as it’s at a higher level of language, as I stated. So gen ed for Berkeley’s L&S is out. In fact both are out if he can’t get at least the IGETC level language.
My opinion - wedge the language in come hell or high water by spring — unless the major and and college you’ve chosen allows partial. Keep in mind having partial puts you at a slight disadvantage. You can take it P/NP and maybe do ASL.
I applied to UCI, UCSB, UCSC, UCD, and UCSD. Do you know if they have any specific details regarding the IGETC?
You need to go by your major and college. You can email admissions at each UC and ask.
2 years of high school language fulfils the language portion of IGETC as well.
