I am trying to create a schedule for my junior year. My school offers some AP and dual-enrollment options at community college. I am also trying to make a general plan for 12th grade. I am hoping to do premed but haven’t rolled out engineering. I have thought about taking honors physics along with AP chem and AP calc AB next year so that I could take AP Physics the following year. I can skip over Honors physics and just take AP physics 1 in my senior year. I have already taken AP Bio. Just not sure what to do at this point. Any other suggestions would be great.
11th grade
Schedule 1
AP Calculus AB
AP Chemistry or AP Physics 1
Dual enrollment english comp (1 semester) or AP English Language
Dual enrollment world history (1 semester) AP Euro or AP World
Spanish 4
Other college math class ?
12th grade
AP Physics 1 or AP Physics 2 or c
AP Calculus BC
Spanish 5
Other college math class ?
What kind of college are you thinking about attending? If you’re thinking about State Colleges/Us, then CC credits will transfer nicely. If you are thinking about top privates, they may not.
For premed, some med schools won’t accept Community College credits. They generally prefer 4 year college courses.
So i would suggest AP classes over DE if you are not going to State Us.
If you take DE classes, those grades count toward your college GPA. If you are going to med school, you better make sure you get As. I would for that reason suggest AP classes.
for 11th/12 grade, no need to take another math class. Take an elective like AP Econ or AP Psych
Take a social science senior year. AP psych should be fairly straightforward. (For pre-med you’ll need to take a psychology class in college, which can be the more specialized class after intro to psych if you take AP psych.)
AP physics 1 Jr, 2 Sr would be perfect as a preparation for the pre-med Physics sequence. However AP chem is more important - I’d take that senior year instead of physics 2 unless you can handle both.
I would like to correct my previous post -- It is actually a state university not a community college but I am not sure if this makes any difference
At this point I am thinking out of state. I am aiming for the top private schools. My high school is limited on AP class offerings- no AP psych or AP Econ. Limited AP options have led me to consider dual enrollment. I have also thought about Stanford online high school for AP classes that my HS doesn’t offer. Also I know that Stanford online tuition is very expensive and I would like to find another online AP option.
Because I can’t take AP psych in class at my high school I have the option of dual enrollment psychology at the university senior year. Throughout the HS scheduling process I haven’t put much importance on transferring credits and have justified taking classes that might not transfer because of the positive impact they have on high school GPA.
My school does offer AP language. I could take AP language next year or university english composition. If i took AP language junior year I could take DE english senior year.
Thank you for any help. Scheduling has been hectic this year and I have been struggling to figure it out on my own.
Actually, colleges don’t care for a choice made due to “positive impact on HS GPA”. They care about the thinking behind the choice - which is why classes that indicate rigor matter, academic consistency, etc. However you’re right to think in terms of the classes themselves, not in terms of credit.
Before you get invested in Out of State and Private colleges, run the NPC on your flagship as well as some of your targets and show the results to your parents (after they’ve sat down). Many parents can’t afford either.
