1st Quarter Recap

So most of us have finished the 1st quarter marking period and I'm just curious as to how school is going for everyone. You're welcome to post 1st quarter grades, favorite/least favorite classes and teachers, extracurricular news and anything else new in the past 9 weeks or so.

My grades have been holding up well so far this year (sophomore).

I’ve also found out that I love AP World History because:

-Teacher makes it fun
-Fellow classmates are really close now. <-(first ap class in school for sophomores)
-Actually learn a lot of info. in such a short time rather than in honors
-Plus, I enjoy history b/c my family is from India, and I like to see the correlations
-Overall, good class academically and socially.

Band: Playing level of the entire band decreased when the seniors left.
AP Stat: Easy subject, terrible downcurves on tests, terrible grades. I’m also the youngest one and terrified of my teacher…
Health: Basically study hall.
Algebra/Trig: Easy class and nice teacher.
Spanish: Foreign language is always a cakewalk and you’re guaranteed a 95+! Although it’s hard to get 100s on tests/quizzes.
English: Too much busywork…teacher is nice, though.
Chem: 100 average, moderate work level, great teacher.
Gym: Worst class and lowest grade…
AP World: Really love my teacher and my class and easily the best period of the day, but the work takes a good chunk of my time. I was expecting in the 80s on the tests, but I actually got 100 on the last one and a 95 on the first one…

AP Calculus AB - …Definitely was much easier in the beginning of the year than it is now, however, I still managed to keep my A. 94.0%

AP English Literature - Pretty intense, teacher is a tough grader and was pretty critical of my essays, but I’m grateful. She went to Oxford to get her Master’s in English and she has been a great help in terms of helping me with my college essay. I received an A-. 91.0%

AP US Politics and Government - Really fun class, I love the teacher, the material is both easy and super interesting. Received an A+. 100.0%

Marine Biology - I took this as an “easy” senior year class so I wouldn’t have to stress another AP and whatnot… Severely underestimated how harshly the teacher grades (I soon learned I cannot do homework in the hallway two minutes before the bell for that class and somehow get a 100.) I got an A. 96.0%

Latin IV - Nice class, sometimes challenging, sometimes a cake walk. I received an A+. 98.0%

First Quarter:
UW GPA - 3.9
Weighted GPA - 4.3

Intro to Number Theory (A) - The professor is really stereotypical and absentminded, and the class gets cancelled all the time. We’ve only had three assignments, and we have a homework assignment from early September that he hasn’t graded yet.

Intro to Ethics (A) - I go to this class for two hours twice a week, and I wish it was a MWF class because it gets boring to sit there for two hours straight listening to a lecture. The material is interesting, but he spends half the class reviewing things we already learned, and that gets old. Our papers aren’t graded very harshly (so far), but I don’t mind in the least. :)

Linear Algebra (A) - I don’t pay attention in class as much as I should. For the most part I just read the textbook after school.

Intro to Differential Equations (A) - My favorite class by far. I’m not entirely sure why, but I think it’s because the professor calls on volunteers to answer questions instead of just lecturing.

IB HL Biology: 92% (A)

I barely escaped with an A this marking because the teacher decided to curve the last two tests, which pushed my grade from an ~88 to a 92, ultimately moving me from a B to an A. Considering the fact that the teacher can’t teach and barely knows any of the material, I’m pleased with this.

** IB History of the Americas HL **: 100% (A)

This is an automatic 100 for everyone, whether they turn in the work or not.

** IB Psychology SL **: 100% (A)

Basically a study hall…the few papers we’ve done this year has been completion grades, so, since everything has been turned in, I automatically get a 100.

** IB English HL **: B (?)

The teacher doesn’t post grades anywhere, so I have no idea what this grade actually is. I received poor grades on a couple worksheets and a quiz, so I think that will cost me an A for the marking period. Everything is weighted the same, so a small quiz or binder check and 12,000 word summer reading responses are both worth 100 points.

** IB Math SL II **: 83% (B)

Really disappointing since Math has traditionally been my best subject. Screwed myself out of A’s on multiple tests due to second-guessing myself or making stupid mistakes, and totally bombed a pop quiz earlier in the year, which tanked my grade.

** IB Spanish IV SL **: 94% (A)

Spanish has always been an automatic A for me…all we’ve been doing is watching Spanish movies/soap operas and responding to various Spanish articles.

** TA (AP Euro) **: No grade

So in total, that’s 4 A’s and 2 B’s. My unweighted GPA for the year is 3.67, and my weighted GPA is 4.67. Really hoping to get straight A’s in the second marking period, since I heard that receiving an A average in a class would automatically exempt me from the final exam. Would be nice to be done school June 2nd and not have to worry about final exams.

1st period - Alg. 2H - 94.45% Dammit. That’s the first thing I think when I see my math grade. I’m good at math, but at the same time I suck at it, y’know
2nd period - AP Gov - 93.49% 93’s okay, at least I don’t have a B/C like the majority of the freshman (~80-90) taking AP Gov.
3rd period - Chinese 2H - 99.4% Grades are super inflated. Tests are super easy.
4th period - Bio H - 98.37% Was surprised I don’t have at least >99%. It’s cause I got lazy with the “nature of science” labs.
5th period - Lit H - 93.57% This is the only class where I still don’t get how to make good grades in this class. The reason I still have a 4.0 in lit is because of the fluff the teacher gave us at the beginning of the year.
6th period - Int. to Engineering - 94.83% Don’t really care about this grade. It sucks, and I had no choice but to sign up for this s***ty class. But I can just do the extra credit essay and get 5 points added to my grade for a 100.

So overall I’m not doing terrible, but I’m not doing phenomenal either.

Alright first semester recap time! (I’m on block schedule)

Honors English 2- 98%
This class is a joke. The teacher legitimately is starting to grade people down this term for not reaching my standard of work, which is sad considering this class is my “do homework” period. I also got a 100 on the ACT-esque final which definitely reassured me for next year :)

Master Singers/Show Choir- 100%
Our tone is suffering. Enough said.

Honors Chem- 94%
Initially was freaked out by the amount of work in this class but it turned out to be manageable. My teacher adores me so that’s cool.

Spanish 3-
Yo era muy nervioso sobre este clase porque yo ten

AP Economics (97.8%) - Oh my goodness, this class is way easier than I thought it would be. I don’t even study for the tests anymore because they all just require a knowledge of the vocabulary terms and basic logical skills. This is by far my easiest AP class.

AP Calculus AB (91.1%) - On the other end of the scale, we have this class. It’s not super difficult, but I actually do try and put effort into this class. I study for all the quizzes and tests and do fairly well on them.

French V (94.1%) - Actually, my grade is pretty high considering that an 87% is an A in that class. It’s not difficult as long as you do the homework and pay attention in class.

Physics (95.3%) - Thank god for grade inflation. I average a 76.4% on the tests, but because they’re only worth 10-20 points each and each homework assignment is also worth ten points each, you can see some pretty clear grade inflation here. As a result, I don’t study for any tests and just do all of my homework for this class at lunch.

AP US History (92.4%) - Again, thank the lord for grade inflation, especially since an 87% is an A. I got 25 extra credits points for showing up at a lecture on a Saturday, which bumped my grade up by about four percentage points.

AP Lang (94.9%) - Timed writes are the devil, but once you get used to them, they’re not that bad. Plus, I’m on my teacher’s good side, so that always helps.

Anyways, hooray for straight A’s. I’m pretty happy with my grades.

Freshman here:

Spanish 3 H Pre Diploma- 93.7
I’m the only freshman and the only kid with an A in the class. Teacher doesn’t teach, the book activities are the entire class.

Physics First Honors- 94.3
Amazing class and learning so much. One test reduced me from a 97 to a 94, screw me.

Pre-IB English I- 93.7
Average English class, the workload is rough to the others but normal to me. Semester should be around a 95.

Pre- IB World History- 91.1
Had a 98 until my group forgot to do their part and make the entire PowerPoint while I memorized a speech. Got a 70 on it and it reminds me to never trust people. The teacher is new as my old one retired after one week. We know more than her on WH but she curves every test like 20 points so who the hell cares.

Honors Alg 2- 97.7
Online, since I joined my high school late, easy to say the most but I’m learning!

Studio Art I- 97.6
Learning art is fun, it’s my only non honors class so it’s fun to listen to all the dumb kids talking about how they lost their virginity the night before.

Wait it seems like everyone is on the 10 point scale. 93-100 is an A for us, and a lot of my B’s are 90-92s. Does anybody know if colleges like change your GPA to match other applicants?

AP Euro: Love this class. Getting lazy about the homework though, still have an A+
AP Calc: Got an A+, not too difficult of a class overall
AP Computer Science: Taking it online so it’s kinda hard. Still have a 99% but struggling with content more so than my actual grade
AP Art: Love this class! Got a cool piece going on that I’m excited about
Senior Project: I hate this class. Ugh. Probably have like a B.
East/West: A+, easy senior required class

CALC AB: Hahahahah what. I totally slacked off first quarter, got an A, did the same as second quarter rolled in… got a D on the test. FMLFML.

APUSH: I get the highest test scores on both the APUSH classes, which means I had a 98% in the class. The kids who got 7x-8x% on the tests, however, ended up getting higher class overall grades than me because they did the extra credit… Time to invest less time on APUSH and more in AB.

APEH: Been paying a ton of attention and studying a crap-ton throughout first quarter. Ended up with a 100+% somehow and still don’t know jack.

Business: Hahahahahahahaha what. It’s concurrent enrollment, but it’s totally just a fluff course.

English: Meh. Medium workload. I’m fine.

French: I’m in FR1. And I’m dying. I can’t pronounce words worth squat.

Programming: I do homework in that class. The teacher’s super condescending, which totally ruins the class for me. The few times I do pay attention, I can’t help being turned off by how [kinda] rude he is to the students who… are normal students. The only kids he likes are the kids who already know everything because they’ve been programming since they were kids && the girl who sucks up to him 24/7.

Chemistry: Dafuq is this? I need to take AP Chem senior year, I absolutely have to… so that I don’t have to take it in college. Because holy crap the class is stupid.

What grade are you in @lemonchangjo, I’m wondering since you have the title of Calc AB and French 1, complete opposites!

Haha I’m a sophomore. I’m supposed to be in Spanish 4, but my Spanish 3 teacher was… a lazy bum who didn’t teach and only catered to the native-Spanish-speakers. I didn’t really feel like repeating Spanish 3, though, and I knew I’d struggle in Sp4, so I was all “screw it I’ll take french. dem crepes.”

Seems sensible lol “dem crepes”, though only a freshman, I would recommend self-studying and taking the AP test for both. I know how you feel, my Spanish teacher is a Argentinean who prefers to teach with book activities rather than explaining anything, every question is a “good” question that she will have to look up haha. Also, that is pretty awkward, 9th graders in one class, and seniors in the other!

Did you take Alg 2 over summer or in 8th grade?
