Does anyone know what these things are like? I was invited for having a GPA above 3.9 (which is really awesome! I don't mean to sound ungrateful), I've just always felt uncomfortable going to these types of things..

Do people usually bring their parents as the guests? What was it like if you've been there?

Hi! I was wondering if you found out today that you made it into that program? & Congrats! I hope to become part of the honors program as well :)

mikedervi - I received an e-mail today saying that I was invited because of my GPA. Thing is, I’m not a part of the University Honors Program (UHP). I don’t think it’s UHP-specific; I think it’s just a sort of achievement ceremony.

arcadefire1027 - Congrats as well! Oh, I’m not planning to bring guests mainly because I also feel uncomfortable myself, haha.

to mikedervi- This ceremony is unrelated to the university honors program since I’m not in the honors program and the honors program only requires a 3.5. This is just a general awards ceremony as far as I know

shesasensation- Well I’d rather go by myself, but I already told my mom so now she’ll want to go…I just hope it wouldn’t be awkward or out of place bringing my parents, and that most people would also

w00t. i also got invited for a 3.9 gpa. Why would you guys feel uncomfortable?? You feel like you deserve don’t you?? And besides, our parents will get all happy and maybe invest more money in our tuition or give us more spending money. Its a win win you guys.

Side question: I was looking at the UCR Convocation website, and it said you had to be nominated by some faculty member or dean to go to the award. Anybody know anything about this? I though it was just because of my GPA, but I’m not sure.

here is the link: [University of California, Riverside – Honors Convocation Home](http://www.honors.ucr.edu/convocation/Default.htm)

Hey guys,

friend just told me she got an e-mail regarding the Dean’s Academic distinctive Award, as in the e-mailing regarding the error. Did you guys get that e-mail in your inboxes about the Convocation error?

Let me know, thanks

klim3690 -
I received that e-mail as well. My GPA’s been 3.9+ since I began here at UCR though… Maybe because I’m not in Honors? Haha, oh well.

They said they’d send out an e-mail to the real recipients tomorrow. We’ll see what happens.

Yeah I have the 3.9+ too, but I’m in UHP. I have a feeling it’s affiliated with the UHP though. Good Luck

The e-mail was sent to the corrected set of recipients this morning.

I received an e-mail, so I’m guessing that it’s not only for people in UHP.

Yeah, just got mine.

Debbie also sent me an e-mail saying that people who only had a 3.9+ for only a quarter got the e-mails too… which was the error. Anyways, glad things are squared away now.

First of all: bring your parents if you’d like to, there’s no reason to feel embarrassed about doing so. I have gone to this ceremony, and from what I’ve seen most people end up doing so. Secondly, this is a university-wide program; it is not limited only to people in the UHP program (I wasn’t in it my Freshmen or Sophomore years and still was invited to receive an award. Third, the theater where it takes place is going to be REALLY crowded (don’t know why they don’t turn it into three smaller ceremonies or whatever), so make sure you get there a little early, unless you want to stand for two hours. Most importantly, have fun :-)

I have a question can you join the honors program in your sophomore year

-> Jason2009

Yea

Sophomore Honors
Students who did not apply as incoming freshmen, or applied and were not accepted, can apply to the Sophomore Honors Component of the University Honors Program. Applications to Sophomore Honors are accepted during the spring quarter of a student’s freshman year at UCR.
