I’m a junior in high school, but I skipped my Sophmore year so this is only my second year and I’m going to graduate in 2011. Will my scores count toward National Merit? I’m from Georgia and I have a 216, so I think I have a shot at making it!

i got a 178…67 CR, 55 Math, and 56 writing…i’m a sophomore so is that a good score?

California…

Beating myself up for 214…no doubt all my friends were in the 220’s. Only good news is my sister (who’s a junior while I am a lowly sophomore) scored 200 (HA!) so I’m in the clear while my parents duke it out with her.

Would someone please explain how the scoring works. I see where one poster wrote that she/he got 1 question wrong in writing and got a 75, where another poster wrote that she got 2 medium questions wrong in writing and got a 73. My daughter got one hard question wrong and omitted one medium question in writing and got a 70. Why is there such a discrepancy? She took the test on a Saturday. Please help me understand this.

229 (74 CR, 75 M, 80 W) in Washington. Up from a 208 sophomore year. So happy :)

Posters do not always give all pertinent information when reporting scores – a full report would mention the of wrong answers and the number of unanswered questions because wrong answers suffer a 0.25 point guessing penalty whereas omitted questions simply do not add into the raw score.

Saturday testers and Wednesday testers take different tests, so scoring scales can be different. Scaling is a statistical means by which raw scores on different tests can be fairly compared in spite of differences in the difficulty levels of questions.

Difficulty level of question is not a factor in the raw scoring rubric.

235 in washington! R80, M80, and W75

235 in NY: R 80 (Made one mistake, though) M 80 W 75 (Last question).

My D got 222 in NY.

Does anyone knows what it takes (besides making above cutoff score) to become finalist?
I mean in terms of SAT score, gpa. My daughter’s gpa unweighted (despite the fact that she is taking 3 APs and 1 university level non AP class, took another AP sophmore year) is only 93.4.
How low her future SAT score can go?

I got a 215 in Iowa.

I suck at writing and proofreading, and math was just dumb mistakes. But I feel good, although I feel unworthy compared to the scores I’m seeing. Easy state to qualify in, so I should make it pretty easy.

I’d say for making finalist, if you have an A or A- GPA average, and your SAT is at least what you got on the PSAT times 10, then you should be good for those areas. The other areas are cake. Only 6% of people who made semifinalist don’t make finalist, so your daughter should be in good shape.

Thank you for response.

I have just got through some entries on CC of people who were accepted / rejected by Caltech, Stamford. It seems everybody is a semifinalist plus a lot of different things like Intel, Siemens…
And they are still rejected despite SAT2s being 800s… I do not want to put water on a fire, but it seems it really does not matter if you have national merit in your resume.

And I have to tell - what I saw with Caltech rejections - goes into supernatural territory. they are rejecting people with everything perfect.

218 california

do you think i qualified? D:

159 in New york. God why does everyone on this website get such high SAT/PSAT scores?

Most people who come here seem to be overachieving and a little school-obsessed. If you didn’t already notice.

gahhhh 224. i was feelign good about it too til all u smart ppl with 225+ post. meh. gg guys

219 Composite [70CR/79M/70CW] in Virginia.

Probably good enough for National Merit (highest cutoff for Virginia has been 219, and there is a downward trend in PSAT scores this year).

^^ How do you know there is a downward trend in PSAT scores this year? I hope what you say is true, as my D is teetering on the edge.
