Yeah from what I can tell this isn’t the most organized of scholarships. I didn’t event receive a notification that I was advancing to the district competition, I heard nothing until they let me know just two days ago that I was advancing to states. They are doing a great thing by handing out all this money though so I guess for now our job is just to stay patient. If we win, they’ll let us know.

Just wondering if anyone knows how this works, maybe a past winner could help? My son received notification that he made it past the district level and his application was advancing to the state level. We are in PA, if you make it to the state level are you guaranteed to at least get one of the $1,000. scholarships? I know that if you make it to nationals you get at least $4,000. but here in PA the state finalists get a $1,000. scholarship. I guess I am trying to say do the districts in PA only advance the number of finalists that will get a scholarship ie PA had 4 state winners from our district last year and 2 others from the district were national winners so did the district only advance 6 applications?

I haven’t heard anything at all yet, so I assume that means that I didn’t progress from my original status? Just curiously, what are some of your stats?

hey i also applied for this scholarship although i haven’t heard anything from them in awhile. i believe im at the state competetion now?

My dad called and the branch said a decision had been made, it was privileged information, and we would not be able to know. OOoookay…

I guess Miagirl is right. Everyone will just need wait and be patient. Then we will see what happens by the end of February. Obviously it is not as easy as making a phone call to check on your status! Hope everyone gets good news by the end of February. Hang in there everyone.

@jygriebel I’m not an expert or anything, nor am I entirely sure. But I was talking to my counselor about this today. We were talking about how the scholarship is a little disorganized. She said that the reason it seems that way is because of the different levels of judging. Each level is sent to a different lodge, they are required to pick the finalists to go to the next round. That’s about the only thing that is the same. Depending on the lodge, they can choose different numbers of finalists, send you money(which I have only recieved from the local level even though I have made it to the state level) if they wish, and they are the ones that notify you–and sometimes forget to notify you–that you have made it to the next round. So, really, it just depends on where you’re from.

We just contacted our state chair person. His reply to me said “you should have been hearing from the local lodge all along.”

It APPEARS that the “local lodge” (the one I drove 18 miles for!) may not have submitted my application to them. I have a friend who also applied at the same lodge. He’s not heard anything either.

I got my letter a few days ago saying that my app has been reviewed and that I past the district level. So that means I should get my next decision letter in the next 2 weeks or so?

I just got an email that my app made it all the way to states but didn’t make it to regionals so I guess that means nothing for me.

Our state gives you $1,000 if you make it just to State. A one time $1,000. You should try to ask them just to make sure…

I just emailed my state chair and she says Florida doesn’t give anything for making it to states :/

Btw I meant to say nationals* not regionals, my mistake.

My daughter applied last year. Dropped off her app at our local lodge and never heard anything until she received an email in the end of Feb stating she was a finalist. Each lodge/state seems to do things differently. Dont assume you havent advanced because you havent had any contact. Good Luck

@njblue haha I hope you’re right :P.

Heard from the WI scholarship chairperson. He said letters are going out tomorrow (applicants will receive a letter regardless).

The head of my local lodge called to tell me that I am a district winner, so I won $1000 right off the bat. I’m in Wisconsin, too, and I can confirm what Madison85 says–the guy said that letter would be going out this week, but he wanted to call me, first. :)

D1 finally heard something yesterday (we’re in Michigan). Her app died at the district level, we’re assuming based on lack of financial need (their opinion…not ours :-). At least they gave some sort of feedback. Hopefully her Elks Legacy app will fare better since it’s based strictly on merit. Good Luck to all still waiting to hear!!

tkahre - thanks for replying and trying to help! We didn’t receive any money for making it through the local or district level. We received a letter dated January 25th on February 5th from the district saying the application moved onto states. Don’t know why it took that long to get here but I’m glad we heard something, apparently some people aren’t notified of anything.

stereostaticxx - not sure if you were asking for my son’s stats or not but here they are:

SAT - Math 710, Reading, 640, Writing 600. Has a 98.4% GPA (equivalent of a 4.0). Doesn’t really have a lot of “leadership” but a good amount of extracurriculars, work experience, some volunteer hours and has taken some college courses.

Since there are so many levels, local, district, state and national how far you advance probably depends on the other people at each level you are competing against.
