2010-2011 Elks MVS Scholarship

Has anyone heard from Arizona? My daughter submitted her application on time last year, but she hasn’t heard anything from anyone. The rep from the Elks lodge told her that he had not heard anything either. I was thinking he could have told her if she advanced to States or not, but he could not tell her that either.

You can look online at the ELK MVS website. They list STATE directors for the scholarships. They have phone and email addresses posted. It would be PAST state now, as that was done at the end of January, so they can at least tell you if THEY forwarded it on. It’s out of their hands so wouldn’t affect any scholarships.

According to the letter we received from our district, the district judging deadline was to be completed by January 26th and forwarded on to the state level. The state judging has to be completed by February 16th and the national judging is to be completed by February 28th. I called our state chair today to see when they would be done since it is almost February 16th and he told me that the state winners would be announced by May 1st. He sounded rather elderly and I think he was confused with the final national winners.

Anxious, my son found the state information online from the national site (we are in AZ also). He tried emailing the state chairman (there was no phone number listed) and he never heard back. He doesn’t want to keep bugging them, so he decided to just wait till they call him (if they do). In the meantime, I did find the Elks AZ state website that lists the winners. They are still showing last year’s winners, but I assume they will eventually show who made it to state when they update for this year’s winners. I would suggest you just check ths site periodically. The state’s don’t have to be done with their judging till February 16th. Then they are supposed to send the state winners to National by that date. Natl is supposed to notify everyone by Feb 28th. It looks like last year a bunch of applicants in AZ got $1000 each for making it to state, and a few (I think eleven or so) were passed on to Natl so they were guaranteed $1000 per year and were in the running for the bigger prizes. So I think anyone in AZ may want to monitor this site and check under scholarships and hopefully the winners for this year will be posted soon: azelks.org

Thanks for the info. I hope we will hear soon one way or another.

Man Florida is stingy, seems like every other state gives those who make it past district level $1,000 while Florida gives none

Actually, I’m confused. I just received a letter day, but the grammar isn’t the best so I’m not sure if I advanced to state or not:

“You are to receive a $1,000 Wisconsin Elks Association for one year. No other funds will be provided by either the Wisconsin elks Association or the Elks National Foundation.”

I guess they missed a word in that first sentence, haha, because it doesn’t completely make sense–and I guess that money is a consolation prize, not money for advancing.

Edit: Actually, I think I get it now. This letter is from the state scholarship chairman. That means that my application made it all the way to state, but will not advance to nationals.

nonexistent: My daughter (we are also in Wisconsin) got the same letter today, $1,000 for one year and no other funds will be provided.

But, don’t some local lodges also give out money, separate from the MVS national competition?

It is confusing.

Found today that I was a local winner. No funds there, but a celebration dinner is in order. Any cali people have info?

I got a letter today in Wisconsin, also with bad grammar, telling me that my application was being sent to the national scholarship committee. Apparently, I made it through the local, regional, and state levels. I had no idea, I was never emailed or mailed anything telling me this. It was sort of confusing the way it was worded, but I think that the national committee will be somehow getting me the further application materials I need to complete as there was nothing else in the letter and there is nothing on the website either.

Anyone know if NY gives out $1,000 for making it to the State level? I wasn’t contacted by anyone after my application was submitted and had to call about 25 different people until I was finally told that mine advanced to States (in an e-mail with terrible grammar, might I add).

Joeshie, I’m from California as well and I received a letter today stating I have a celebration dinner and that I’ll be receiving a scholarship from them.
Unfortunately that letter didn’t say where I’m currently at right now. All I know is that I made it past district from my previous letter. I sure do hope it’s not a consolation prize…!

Just got the mail and my son received a letter from the Michigan Elks Association. The suspense is killing me!!! (It’s a security envelope, so the flashlight trick is out.) Due to an activity after school, he won’t be home until 5:30!!!

I feel your pain MichMom. When my sons letter from local lodge came telling him that he advanced to State it wasn’t sealed. When he received a letter from the district I wasn’t so lucky and had to wait until sometime in the evening to learn that he was chosen as a state winner. They said the Missouri State Elks Association would send a letter giving the details. And so, we wait…

I got a letter today saying I was one of 19 kids from Massachusetts to make it to the national level out of over 400! Obviously I’m incredibly excited. But does anyone know if this means I will get any scholarship money? Or do I still have to wait and find out if I made it further?

If you got a letter that you made it to nationals you are in the running for the big money, congratulations! The national scholarships range from $4,000 to $60,000. If your application was sent to the national judging the lowest amount you will get would be a $4,000 scholarship ($1,000 per year for 4 years). We’re still waiting to hear any news here in Pennsylvania on the state level judging.

Wow! That’s amazing! I’m so excited now. This is my first good news that’s college related since I’m still waiting to hear back from all my schools. Good luck to you in PA and everyone else still waiting to hear back and congrats to other national finalists!!!

kkamll - congratulations! The Elks will be asking you for a few more things that you will need to supply before you are guaranteed the $1000 per year. But once you have done your part you will get $1000 a year or maybe more if you win one of the bigger prizes.
Still no word here in AZ… sigh

@Lennase, do you live in norcal or socal? And seeing as they didn’t say something like “This will be all you are getting” you probably are advancing further! Congratulations :D

I received a letter saying that my app passed district judging (Jan 20)
and an invitation to a dinner in the next letter, but no word on if I receive a scholarship at the dinner, if I passed state judging, or if I advance to nationals.
Norcal!
