2011 UC Transfer Admission Decisions

i have a question. i stayed at college for almost 4 years and finished up about 90 units. the reason why my units are so small is because i dropped or failed several classes. i didnt even work except a part-time job that i did during summer. the first year at college, i was having troble catching up english as i just moved here. at the time, i had no idea what im gonna do and thought transfer is not for kids like me. i dont know how i got here and applied to UC’s haha. anyway would a prolonged stay at college affect my chance badly?

@HelloG If you completed all pre-reqs for Anthro then you have a really good chance, try to finish the pre-reqs for Math/Econ so you can switch majors. I think you’re borderline for UCB.

@SMCguy. Thanks SMCguy, I didn’t even think I was borderline at UCB to be honest.

smcguy-whats the difference between economics and haas? Is haas harder to get into than econ? or they are the same?

@helloG sorry to burst your bubble, but UCLA doesn’t take transfer students alt. major into consideration for admissions. I know this because I did some research on their website. I applied as an Econ major before I found out they don’t do this! =( I think i’m going to call and see if they can somehow change my primary major choice, or find out if its too late.

jacktupp- people under UCLA TAP program are allowed to have an alternate major choice. It is too late now to change your primary major as the due date was January 30, 2011.

@HelloG I’m sorry, I thought you applied to UCB as an Anthro major. If Econ, it’s a reach =/

@JackTupp, Actually Jacktupp if you apart of TAP, they do look at your second major.
[UCLA - Transfer Alliance Program](http://www.ugeducation.ucla.edu/tap/) - for more info.

Well, I hoping my EC’s can cover the gap. I worked overseas for two years, ^_^.

Hey if you get rejected and appeal. Can you appeal to a different major?

Ella89, yes it does make sense that they would not simply assume someone is making up things, but I recall seeing one of those “counselor presentations” that the UCs have (it was a video, but I don’t remember exactly where I saw it) that advised students not to manufacture hardships while writing the PS.

It went on to say something like “admissions officers have seen thousands of applications and can easily spot something if a story does not make sense” - now I don’t know how exactly they would handle something like that, but I would be curious to find out.

For example if a 17 year old claimed that they had worked 5 different jobs, managing various businesses and turned around these failing businesses to profitability and so on, you could see how that would immediately raise a red flag (even if it were an extraordinarily rare case and were true). Of course, I’m using an extreme example, but you can see what I mean.

in the PS, the UC Berkeley admissions officer told us in the workshop for the PS that its fine to talk about a hardship but make sure that you talk about how you overcame it. She said that do not make your essay all about the hardship, mention it briefly and talk about how it made you a stronger person and how it will help you in your future.

Yea, the example of the 17 year old who worked 5 jobs example sounds very fishy!

Staying a long time at a CC (by itself) has zero effect on your admission chances. As long as you did something productive (does not matter what) in those 4 years you would be OK.

90 units in 4 years is perfectly fine, provided you have given them some sort of explanation for this, and also it would be important to explain the reasons behind the failures and dropped classes (preferably you did this in your PS or the comments section at the end of the application).

By the end of this spring semester I would have been here for 5 full years, completing 97 units, and I also have 5 Ws!! However, I used the Personal statement to explain my situation thoroughly, also giving specific references and examples.

Yeah, my story is rather obscure. I actually kind of expected to be asked for supplemental info. The only thing I was asked for was asked about though was an educational gap.

And I was the supervisor of a gym, working full time by 17 ;)

I have a 3.96 (IGETC and 94 quarter units completed upon applying, all A’s and 1 B) and a 4.0 in my major- political science.
I’m a bit older than most candidates and have a combat military background (which I of course milked like no other in, and based my future ambitions on through my essays, which I let about 10-15 people read and analyzed the significance every word incorporated throughout a two month period) The thing is that other than my military service I don’t have much of an ec record and did not work a lot while attending cc.
Hopefully that should be enough for UCLA/UCB. What do you guys think?

I applied to UCSD,UCB,UCLA,UCSB and UCD
So far only heard back from UCSD, UCSB (accepted to both)

good luck everyone!

roee 87, i dont think the EC’s matter as much, especially when the rest of your stats are really good. a 3.96 is excellent. ucla loves good stats and ucb loves nontraditional students. i dont really think you need it much, but either way, good luck to you!

@ roee87

I’m almost in the same boat as u, former active duty sailor now CC hopeful transfer student. I only have a 3.75 and no real EC but got my 60 plus credits in almost one year. Also thought I made a very good personal essay regarding experiences. Hopefully we have a good advantage for getting in and I’m keeping an eye out how fellow Vets do. Good luck to everyone!
