After some research Goucher’s officially off the list.
And what you say about Baltimore really makes me want to take JHU off the list now too, lol.

It’s an ugly place, what can I say? You’ll have fun as a college student because it’s college. You have JHU and Morgan State and UMBC and Goucher and Towson and a few others around - there will always be something to do. You won’t be bored, I promise, and if you’re looking to go into medicine or a hard science you can’t go wrong there. But the city doesn’t have much of its own character and a terrible murder rate. Or at least that’s my impression. There are also clubs (dunno if you can get into them while you’re under 21) and good restaurants, but the great shopping is in Annapolis and DC. It’s a place where “you make your own fun!” actually means something. It’s not New York or DC or Boston or LA or Chicago - a place where you can walk out of your dorm and get swept into something right away. A couple of weeks ago I got caught up in the rally traffic on the Metro (it took me a half hour more than usual to get to Georgetown); as far as I know, CNN isn’t exactly running people over to get to Baltimore. XD

Oh, and public transportation is terrible. Bring your own car.

Come visit; you may like it. JHU is certainly a good enough school to make a visit worthwhile.

Lol, I know this wasn’t your intention, but now I really want to take it off the list. I definitely want a city that’s alive and has character. And there’s no way I’ll be able to bring my own car, for the record. Someone told me JHU has a fantastic writing program and a flexible curriculum, which are the only reasons the school caught my interest.

Doing more research (it never ends :p).

Some shameless promotion:

Columbia and Georgetown both have scholars programs, both of which I think are awesome, though I am not currently a part of either. Columbia’s is called the “Scholars Program.” There is no separate application for it, but generally speaking, excellent test scores and a display of some form of social conscience are the traits of those included in the program. Make sure that your Columbia application is on point - there are big rewards to be had!

As for Georgetown’s program, it’s called the 1789/GSP Scholarship. Not only do they take a pretty hefty sum off your annual tuition, if you don’t have a full ride, but they also give you plenty of great opportunities to network with people in the DC area. In addition to that, you have the same sort of nurturing environment that you would have in the Columbia Scholars program. Again, social conscience + bangin’ application = :).

A sad observation:

Harvard gets no love on these boards.

Anyway, I’m going to stop procrastinating here. Best of luck, folks!
