@Elena1355 It’s possible but highly unlikely. Most people get them from mid April to late May. Transfers also get packages.
@gillianes123 Film production is soooo competitive for freshman that I can’t even grasp if they have more than a couple spots for transfers. Not sure anyone knows the answer to that. But @WWWard gets the challenges of SCA having a freshman this year that was admitted undeclared then successfully did an internal move to SCA. You may want to click on his name then read some of his replies or perhaps he will jump in. (His perspective wouldn’t be as a transfer, but still may offer you great info on the stats in general.) I don’t want to tell you not to apply to a certain major, but being that it is film studies, I would be sure to find out more about it before you do. And if you are happy coming in as something else and minoring at SCA, find out all you can to determine if that is a better or more realistic option.
Just curious will you be trying for Champan or LMU as well?
@hopefultiffany I applied as anthropology (1st choice) and sociology (second choice) when it came to USC. For UCLA, I went with anthropology as well as linguistics and computer science. Viterbi does traditionally tend to drag things out until around late May; it’s usually the last school to release decisions. I have no idea why it took so long for me to hear though as both of my majors are part of Dornsife. USC does love to torture us transfers I just hope nobody is unfortunate as I was as to hear past the June 1st deadline. I’m not sure how common that actually is. I remember like one other person on here that’s mentioned it happening to them.
I ultimately went with USC. I was admitted as a sociology major, but I soon switched to computational linguistics. The fact that I was able to change majors so easily is one reason why I liked USC so much. I was admitted as an anthro major at UCLA, but the student advisors basically said it was going to be impossible for me to switch to linguistics and computer science (even though it’s in the same school).
@smc2usc I’d say you have very good odds. Of course, there’s never a sure thing, but your GPA is above average and your EC’s are also quite nice. It’s true that EC probably matter more if you’re like a borderline applicant, but your strong GPA makes that a non-issue. I wouldn’t worry about not having letters of rec. I was stressing about that so much when I saw that the professors I asked both somehow forgot to write me a letter! I was still accepted though. If you’ve maintained that GPA while taking some poli sci and GE courses, I’d say you’re good Just like UCLA, a lot of SMC peeps end up at USC. Heck, even the director for orientation said she was an SMC girl
Has anyone checked their application status yet? I just checked mine and it says “click here to submit mid-year grades online.” and when I clicked on it, it asks for my Senior Year Report. It’s been a couple of years since my senior year, and I’ll have to request a transcript to be sent from my high school (which is a whole state away). Will this delay my admissions decision (I’m applying for the undergraduate department of Psychology)? I’m currently taking 20units at a community college, I have already taken 33 transferable credits, with a 3.78 accumulative GPA. Please let me know if anyone has any experience with this or how should I go about this? Any response will be much appreciated!
@zettasyntax That’s awesome, congrats on everything! Do you like USC so far? I interned at USC last year and loved it and I was able to talk to someone in the admissions board and she said something about having to take an placement exam (at least for my major cs). Did you happen to do something like that? I think I have to stay a bit longer bc of the requirements even if I’ve take a lot of units at CC maybe like ~75. Trying to weigh the pros and cons
@hopefultiffany I loved my time at USC. I actually graduated this past August. I was there from January 2016 to August 2017. In hindsight, I wish that I would have never taken summer semesters and took things a little slower. My projected graduation date was December 2017, but I was really bitter over the whole spring admit thing and wanted to participate in the 2017 commencement. My advisor told me that was only possible if I took summer 2017 classes.
Hmm, my major was part of Dornsife, but I did have to take several Viterbi classes. My favorite was CSCI/ITP 368 with CSCI 201 being a close second. I didn’t have to take a placement exam to enroll in CS classes, but I suppose this could be the result of the new CSCI 102 class. My guess is that they want to see how much you know and either enroll you in the usual starter class CSCI 103 or the less intensive CSCI 102 (and then you’d be able to take CSCI 103). I know what you mean. A con of the summer semester for me was the price! USC offers very little financial aid for summer and that’s one of the only occasions where I had to utilize loans. If there’s one thing I learned, it’s that it definitely doesn’t have to be a race
do you guys think I should send in my winter quarter grades even if they did/do not ask for it? I am on track for a 3.83, which is significantly higher than my cumulative at around 3.2. I assume that they would like to see the high trend. I’ve read that a few of you guys sent it in?
First Post Woohoo!
Honestly, this wait has been incredibly nerve-wracking! I applied as an international student my senior year in high school and got rejected :(. Even though my current college is alright, I’ve always dreamed of going to USC, and want to get another crack at it. Currently, I’m applying as a Freshman to the Marshall School of Business with these stats:
Gender: Male
Ethnicity: Asian
University: Loyola Marymount University (also Los Angeles)
Major: Accounting + Finance + Philosophy Minor
GPA: 4.0/4.0
Unit Completed: 14 last sem (dropped 3 last semester due to conflicts with rugby) + 24 transferred (AP) + 16 current
EC: Nothing exceptional tbh. LMU rugby team (player + team historian), Chinese Club (Photographer+Content Management), Freelance photography, Community service, Finance Society (member)
GE Completed: This is weird because my schedule worked out in a way (LMU doesn’t let international students pick class schedules) that 2 of my first sem classes count for Writ 150. Add Math, one transferred from UCLA, Dance, and Philosophy and it’s around 4-5/8 GE (not sure how the courses will translate).
Essays: Varied. I had two friends at Columbia as well as two university professors read them, and they received mixed reviews. Wrote about the opportunities USC can provide and about my tattoo.
Recs: I had 2 professors (one wrote a supposedly glowing review and the other I’m not sure).
Anyways, I was wondering if completing only 4-5/8 GE would hurt my chances instead if I had taken 6/8. If I’ve taken courses that count as electives, do they still receive credit (Financial accounting is required here, but apparently not at SC)? Best of luck to everyone, and hopefully we all receive the good news soon or later
Hey guys, I have some questions, as I have been focusing on the UC campuses and applied to USC just as a side. However, it’s a great school and I would love to have the option of attending there
I haven’t received any emails at all… is that a bad thing? I’ve heard that other students are receiving emails about winter grades and stuff.
I have a 4.0 but I’ll only have 59 USC transferrable units. Will I be considered as a sophomore instead? Or will they flat out just reject my app?
Also, how important is a LOR?
@gillianes123 Persistence is often rewarded regarding USC SCA. Bryan Singer, for example, applied to USC SCA and did not get in to USC. He applied again as an external transfer, got in to USC - but again not into SCA. On the third try, he managed to internally transfer into SCA.
Last year, my daughter applied to USC and SCA, but only got in to USC as Undeclared (her first two choices were identical to yours). By October 2017 she was admitted into SCA as an internal transfer (for CMS), beginning this term.
Here is the link to the process of applying to USC SCA as an external transfer…

Good Luck
@gearsekandou Yes! Especially if it helps your gpa.
I’m curious about the weight that personal statements and application questions carry in admission decisions. I’m an applicant with a lower gpa (3.55), but I am still hopeful because of the time, energy, and feedback that I received on my application essays. I felt that my essays showed my personality, dedication, how I have overcome challenges in my life, and why I chose the major that I did. Anyway, I wanted to see if anyone had insight on the weight of application essays, considering USC’s average transfer GPA has remained relatively low at a 3.7 and people with 4.0 GPAs have been denied in the past (according to previous forums).
Transfer student from a CCC.
I applied to Marshall School of Business.
Gender: Male
Ethnicity: Caucasian
GPA: 3.79 (Very strong upward trend; last 19 classes were A’s)
Major GPA: 4.0
Pre-reqs: Completed
GE’s: 5/6 completed. (Will this hinder my chances?)
Total Units: 99 Completed
Essay: Fairly decent 8.5-9/10
Letters of Recommendation: I received two. I had the opportunity to take two classes with each of my professors, which, I believe, was conducive to receiving exceptional letters. (Also, one was a USC Alum, so I’m sure this can only increase my chances.)
EC’s: VP of Economics Club, AGS Honor society permanent member, co-founder/treasurer of a non-profit, and multiple committees. (Filled out all ten activities)
Applied: UCSB, UCR, UCI, LMU, and NYU.
Pending: UCR
Accepted: UCSB
Good luck to everyone!
@CADREAMIN yes I will be applying to to LMU and Chapman as well. Thanks for your advice!
@CADREAMIN I will also be applying to NYU, Cal State Long Beach, UC Santa Cruz, UC Santa Barbara, and UCLA (although I know for transfers into film they only accept about 20 people but it’s worth a shot I guess!)
@WWWard thanks for the info! I have friends at USC and that’s what they have told me as well. Whatever happens I think everything will work out.
@gillianes123 you’re welcome. good luck…
@berther USC probably takes more of a closer look on your essays compared to other schools. I think its especially more beneficial if you are applying to a major that’s not (so) impacted. I mean, if you are going to Business/CS, an essay can only do so much when they have to choose between a bunch of people (w/ high gpas, etc).
@iwcwombat I applied to Marshall, so wish me luck!
Hey everyone, I finally decided to join this thread because I was on USC admission’s Instagram and saw all the freshman packages were being mailed out today, which reminded me of my own application. Did anybody here apply to the BFA Acting program? Since for that program, most credits don’t transfer and I would essentially be going as a freshman, will I get my admission decision sooner or does that not matter?
