Per the Viterbi facebook page, the first round of acceptances went out today.
What does the mid -year grade form mean? Is it good or bad?
@OmaNebr Those are for first year applicants not transfers. At least, I am pretty sure.
@KG5APR It’s for transfer, too. Very small amount but some do get responses.
@CATransfer17 Thank you for the clarification! Do you know why the mid year grades form popped up and then disappeared?
@KG5APR I remember some people from last year’s thread having the same issue. Pretty sure it’s a glitch because USC only asks for mid-year grades from freshman applicants. If they want your grades, they’d send you a Spring Grades Request.
I believe that those in the TTP are finding out. The rest of us transfers have to wait a couple of weeks, or in some cases months.
Thank you for saying that! I have completed 6/8 GE’s (including the global requirements), and finished one of my polisci pre reqs with the second one in progress. I will also have met my major’s foreign language requirement by taking 3 levels of Spanish at SMC; I know this doesn’t have to be done before transferring, but I figured I might as well tackle it now.
I think that what gives me the most anxiety is how unpredictable USC can be— like rejecting people with 4.0’s?? You’re right, there definitely aren’t any certainties and that’s what makes this so darn nervewracking!!
Sorry, I meant to reply to @zettasyntax in my last response
@zettasyntax Thanks for the response! When you got into USC, did you have to take classes other than your major classes? I finished my general ED’s and my labs, but not sure if I will have to take it along with my major classes. Also, would you know if there are chances of not getting into the major? I know for UC’s a lot of people end up being pre majors and they have to do well in order to get in.
I was also curious about the housing situation? I heard it was really hard to get housing and it was “first come first served” style. Since you were admitted later, did you have trouble getting housing? I feel like I would prefer on campus housing or nearby because I’ve been around the area and the houses don’t look very nice but are very $$.
@hopefultiffany Did you get in? If so, congrats! How did you hear?
USC made the news last night:
I applied as a transfer student to SDA at USC and live in culver city. i heard that transfer decisions will be made online on may 31st or get a request for spring grades. if you don’t get a request for spring grades is there any way to find out if you were admitted before may 31st?
so did any transfer students get accepted?
@KG5APR not yet! I just interned at USC last year and will intern this year so I heard a lot of info about transfer students!
@hopefultiffany do you know when the first wave will go out?
@smc2usc You sound more prepared than I was I was lacking the foreign language requirement (I needed to take a level 3 course), but otherwise had completed all other possible GE’s. Spanish at USC was really fun though! We went on a field trip to eat tacos If you have a GPA at or above the average (like yours) and manage to complete as many possible GE’s and major prep courses, your odds are as good as they can possibly be
I totally know what you mean. I was somewhat one of those interesting cases my first attempt at transferring. I had a 4.0 with 40 units completed and 21 in-progress. I received one of the most specific SGRs in history according to the admissions office I called and the girl on the phone said that she had never seen a case where they just wanted to see one grade. My admissions counselor was asking to see my grade in math (it was either stats or pre-calc…I can’t remember exactly). Anyway, I wound up five A’s and one B (the B being the math class). I end up getting rejected. So if you examine my situation, it literally seems like I was rejected for getting a B. That admissions counselor is gone now, but I hear he was really tough.
@hopefultiffany I did have to take the USC-only GEs and one other random elective to meet the minimum upper division requirement. Other than that though, I only took courses that counted toward my major. Any science/math courses that you took should transfer over and it’s actually better that you complete such courses at your current institution. I hear a lot of bad things about math at USC - like it makes you hate math I’m sure you learn a lot, but one guy that I knew withdrew from his linear algebra course two times. It doesn’t seem fun.
Well, there’s always a chance that they might admit you for an alternate major but it isn’t impossible to declare the major if you don’t get in. It would pretty much be impossible to do such a thing at UCLA where CS is uber impacted. The CS major does have slightly more strict grade requirements than other programs though. You need a C or better in a set of core courses. If you get a C-, that’s basically failing the class for purposes of the major and you need to repeat the course. So I guess in a way, even though you’d officially be a CS major if admitted as one, you can’t say that you’re safe as one until you pass these courses. I don’t know if this has changed recently, but it was still the case while I was attending.
I did think that I had a major disadvantage with housing being a spring admit. I didn’t get any of my choices and was instead offered temporary housing until a spot became available elsewhere. I declined the offer though because I didn’t like the sound of living with 5 other roommates. And I only live like 9 miles away from USC, so I was fine with commuting if I didn’t get the housing I wanted. I have no idea how the housing situation is now, but I would hope with the addition of the Village, that means transfer students can at least get the old campus housing Maybe recent transfers can chime in on this?
Anyone hear anything yet?
@zettasyntax , per my bro you are correct about SC’s Math Dept., at least for the engineering required courses. He passed out of Calc I, struggled to get A’s in Calc II & III. Ended up w/a B in Diff Equ.
If you can, get calc out of the way before getting onto campus. If you can’t, get the calc textbook study guide on Amazon.
