2019 November SSAT

73% which I feel is really bad
Any tips on how to improve it

I did not do any prep, but my father has made me do IXL for a while for math. At school I’m only doing Algebra 1, but Ive done geometry and algebra 2 on ixl. I also used to read a ton when I was younger which helped with my reading and verbal. I think just being able to look up every word was helpful. IXL is paid but they give you some practice questions.

Oh ok Great!

Thank you so much!

No one can do better than 99th percentile. Your parents know that there is no such thing as 100th percentile, right? Your perfect SSAT score is not what will keep you from being admitted.

But once you’re admitted, chances are you won’t be the smartest kid in your class. What will your parents say when your grades turn out to be mostly high Bs no matter how hard you try? And how will YOU feel about that? These are the important questions to ask yourself and discuss with your parents in the next few months. The combo of unchecked parental ambitions and a pressure-cooker school is way more concerning than a couple of missed SSAT questions.

Hmmm

Yes to this so many times over. Please start having this conversation with yourself and with your parents. Please don’t go into school thinking that because you got a 99% on the ssat you are going to get straight a’s. Everyone thinks it won’t be them and they will be the kid who can still get 95+ on everything. The fight against grade inflation is very real at the top boarding schools. Especially if you are coming from an underperforming public school - expect the adjustment to be intense.

@southernboyal34 I feel a bit sad to hear about any disappointment in your amazing score. You really could not have done better, even if you had studied. In fact, i would say that sometimes studying for a standardized test, where you aren’t studying information as much as approach/method, can sometimes mess with you, IF you already have a solid approach, which you obviously did. So “studying” in this case may well have hurt your score, not helped it. And all of that aside… even IF you “could have studied more” or even " should" have studied more (which I don’t agree with), I want to say: you are doing amazing work, just by showing up for this exciting endeavor with clear vigor and enthusiasm.

Oh and side note: still NO SCORE over here. So sad (and stressed).

How? They realize you got a top score and better is not really possible??

@Calliemomofgirls That is SO weird. And still nothing from the offices, I’m guessing? That must be so frustrating.

@mondaydevil The only update is that on Friday I talked to them again and they finally agreed – “yes you are correct – there seems to be a problem. No one is here until Monday to look at it so call us then.”
The person I spoke with did say that he knew of another student in the same situation from the location where we took the test, so it sounds like it’s a problem with test site.
UGH.

@Calliemomofgirls That is so frustrating! Do you think the test site did not send the test scores immediately?

Ugh. Still no scores over here. 7 calls to SSAT. No answers. Just “keep waiting” or “I’ve noted your request to look into it — check in a few days.”

Did anyone else take the test in Los Angeles?

@Calliemomofgirls Have you tried calling the test center, maybe? Do you think they might know anything about that?

@Calliemomofgirls Not SSAT, but my DD is still waiting on her SAT Subject Test scores from Nov 2. CollegeBoard has acknowledged the issue and “escalated the case,” whatever that means. Bottom line is, two weeks after scores were released, no one knows where hers are or why they’re missing… I sympathize with you, and good luck!

Are there any books that you recommend that could help with the verbal sections? I’m currently taking a bunch of practice tests until the study guide arrives, but I’m struggling with the synonym practices.

FYI — the missing SSAT scores arrived today!

@Calliemomofgirls YAY!! Did they give you an explanation as to why they were missing for so long? What did she get?

@Calliemomofgirls That is such a relief! What were the scores?
