3.4 gpa, high act

I got a 33 on my act. Could i get into a top tier college even though my gpa is lacking? what are some schools in the midwest that would focus more on the act?

A 3.4 is low for a lot of top schools, but what else do you have to offer to make up for that as an applicant? Hopefully it’s stellar. Also, you may have a bit of leeway if you go to a super competitive, super tough school.

sorry i should revise top tier schools. I live in Madison and am looking for schools the equivalent of UW. But I do go to a very tough school in fact. 3.5 is only in the top 50% of students.
As far as extras: I play varsity soccer and played basketball freshman and sophmore years. I also am in a few clubs, but besides that I don’t have many things that will wow the admissions boards. I do have some volunteer hours but only about 70.

So you aren’t even in the top 50% of your class? You’ll need to look at large publics. Most privates place more emphasis on ECs while many publics place more emphasis on scores. Can you afford paying publics OOS rates?

did you go to West High? if that is the case, 3.4 is not that bad, but that is not a ticket to top schools such as HYP… perhaps you should look into the american top 30 to 50 range,

no I don’t think im going to be able to afford OOS rates
and yeah West High, so I’m hoping the colleges have heard good things about West.
Thanks for the link artlovers!

I’m not trying to rain on your parade, but a lot of students who apply to top schools have around a 33 in ACTs.

I knew people with a unweighted GPA of a 3.4-5 that got into the 30’s and 40’s, like mentioned before.

Your guidance counselor can also help you out when deciding though. You say a 3.5 was 50% range, so there must be a lot of data on that.

Secondly, the State Schools I applied to when i was a senior were very generous with FA, so if you don’t mind going to a large public school i.e. UNC, Washington, Texas, UF, Penn State - then you should apply. Also, do you just not want to stay in Wisconsin? UW is an amazing school.

no thats totally cool, i’m trying to get an honest opinion. I would love to go to a bigger public school, I am not looking for just private schools. Wisconsin is a great school, but I’ve lived in Madison for 8 years now and don’t know if I would want to stay here for at least 4 more. That is if I get accepted which I think i’m on the edge as of now. Also because of the reciprocity agreement between Minnesota and Wisconsin, University of Minnesota is looking like my favorite so far

^^ Most of those schools listed will NOT provide FA to the OP. UNC and UVA are the two publics that meet financial need, even for OOS students. For that reason they are VERY competitive to get in.

OP, do you know how much your parents can afford to pay? You might want to look at the Midwest College Exchange where you can get reduced rates for OOS schools: [MHEC : MSEP Participating Institutions (52)](http://www.mhec.org/MSEPParticipatingInstitutions)

OP do you imply that your budget is less than 9K/year going to UW and stay home or 20K stay on campus?

How about free? West Point, Naval, Coast Guard, Airforce, VMI…

well your situation doesn’t look that bad.

Can’t you get into most public schools even the top ones?
