yeah, its a really long process...you go through interviews and everything, and then you arent even guaranteed anything... :(

i'd advise you to do it.

i got the email when i was applying, but at the time didn't want to come to ucla so i didn't do it.

fast forward to me sitting here without the opportunity for a parking permit, or any of the other perks of alumni scholars :(

^ Funny how things work out.
At first, I didn't even want to come here, even got into my 1st choice school, but I visited and everything changed. Personally I think for the better. Been doing pretty well since I got here. I can't really picture myself anywhere else.

my friend is an alumni scholar and she applied but was rejected for a parking permit. i think the only real perk she is getting is $ but she has to do community service to get it so its not really entirely "free" $

i think you mean the other prestigious scholarship that actually does get guaranteed parking

spam what was your first choice?

zotan, i don't think it predicts your admission decision. I believe they state that in the email. (or they have in the past, when i applied)
[/quote]

I realize it says that, but then why did only select people get it? At my school, only 2 people got the email out of the 20 or so that applied to UCLA. I was one, and the other was a girl who is ranked 2 and had a 32 ACT score.

Can anyone else shine light on whether or not this email means a likely acceptance?

Hmm anybody for making a list of GPA, SAT score, and whether you got the email?

"Can anyone else shine light on whether or not this email means a likely acceptance?"

everyone i knew who applied to ucla at my high school got the email and remember all the really idiotic ones (like constant B- to C students) who thought it meant they got in (rejected of course, and after they had went out to buy ucla gear too). i remember it even telling you on the email sent that getting it means nothing.

Yeah, it does say that. haha.

i was one of those idiotic kids who got an email. So I can tell you first hand that it doesn't mean jack.

I spoke with a lady in the admissions office yesterday, and she stated that although it is NOT a guarantee of admission by any means, the email is based off of GPA; the try to target the top tier of applicants. So not everyone receives it, only their "target" applicants I guess, though again, I know people in the past who have received it but not been admitted. As far as the 'idiots,' either they arent as stupid as you think they are, or there's something on their app that caught the eye of the scholarship people. Anywho, just thought I'd report that...

Thanks vc08, very helpful.

I'm a little puzzled that the "constant B- to C students" got the email, though...

i doubt that many B--> C students got it. Realistically, if they base it on GPA, those students probably didn't get one unless they had very high scores, or unless (more likely) they only got a few Bs or Cs, which were in tough AP classes. UCLA has a very self-selecting applicant pool, most Bs or Cs are in advanced courses.

can anyone answer this question - being offered to apply for the alumni scholarship doesn't mean that you're out of running for the regent, does it?

no, i have never heard that. i mean, you might not get both, but i would be shocked if they limited you to applying for one.

I'm an ASC scholar.

Getting the letter has nothing to do with acceptances.

Definitely do it. It's worth it. Somebody earlier talked about how it isn't free. I don't know about you, but I think it's pretty cool that community service is a requirement for maintaining the scholarship. It's kind of a win-win situation. =]

Also, if you didn't get the letter, don't be deterred. I didn't receive the initial interest letter, but I applied, and I did well. =]

Go Bruins!

So it's basically like another application, right? I've only gone to the website, but people have said that it's another chance for you to tell UCLA why they should accept you.

yes they were AP classes, but they were still straight b students with the occasional C's. that email is honestly nothing special and you dont need it to apply

"can anyone answer this question - being offered to apply for the alumni scholarship doesn't mean that you're out of running for the regent, does it?" wouldnt common sense tell you that if your stats were strong enough to get one, you would probably be in contention for the other?

ohhowiwish: again, not everyone receives the email, it is based on GPA and is sent to the higher-tier of applicants. This is directly from an admissions rep. at UCLA.

Hey all,

I'm an alumni scholar too, and I encourage you all to apply. Free money is always good, and there are some nice perks added to the package as well. The one I enjoy most is probably the free printing in JWAC.

Some responses--

vc08 is right. You can successfully win both Regents and Alumni scholarships. I know people who have done this. While the Regents award relies on academics, the Alumni scholarship relies largely on interviews, so people who excel in both deserve to be double awarded. It's not the same pool of people though, because of the difference in ways the award recipients are selected.

to vienna: The alumni scholarship apps aren't read by UCLA admissions people, unfortch. But don't let that deter you!
