I just got an email regarding this - it is legit, right? Haha I'm a bit paranoid.

Other than that, how does this work? Does anyone know anything about the process, anybody who got one, etc?

I got that email too, so yes it’s legit haha. They have a website, and everything.

[Freshman Alumni Scholarships | UCLA Alumni](http://alumni.ucla.edu/scholarships/apply/freshman.aspx)

What I want to know is if all UCLA undergrad applicants got this, or if it only went out to a select group? If so, then is it a sign that we’re likely to be admitted if we received this?..But maybe I’m thinking about it too hard. It’s killing me to have to wait until the end of March, I’m taking anything I can get haha

From reading past threads, anyone can apply for the scholarship but the email is sent out to only the top tier applicants. It doesn’t mean your admitted but you have a better than average chance. A few searches on college confidential brings this info up.

If you received this email post your GPA and SAT and lets see if theirs a correlation.

I received it.
4.2 UC GPA
2130 SAT

@iiBoGo, I’ve been looking at those threads too, and my stats are quite similar to yours. 4.15 GPA , 2170 SAT, 33 ACT.

Yay! I was also looking at Ms. Sun’s UC Admissions Blog, which said in a post from 2009 that about 12 out of every 100 applicants are notified of the scholarships, and 3-4 of the 12 will get the scholarship. I’m guessing it’s more competitive now, but that’s the best data I could find.

My son got the email too. He has a 4.27 UC GPA and and 2220 SAT (best single test), 300 hrs community service.

Is it typical to apply for a school-specific scholarship before learning of the acceptance decision?

I have a 4.0 UW GPA, 2200 single sitting SAT, and 33 ACT.

Thanks guys! I’m guessing that there’s no harm in applying either way, I might as well!

I find it weird how I still have not received a confirmation email from UCLA to set up an account but I received the alumni scholarship email. BTW, my stats were 4.0 UW and 31 ACT.

I believe the e-mail usually indicates that you have strong enough stats, and suggests a good chance of admission (although it’s certainly not guaranteed). You guys should definitely apply for it. I regret not applying for it when I received the e-mail last year.

On one of Ms. Sun’s blogs a girl (I think it was a girl) writes that she was invited for an Alumni scholarship interview just one day before her UCLA rejection letter arrived. Just the sort of diabolical situation I envisioned in applying for the award without guarantee of admission.

Ms. Sun is correct, and she is a great source of information, both for Cal (as an alum) and UCLA (whom she actively supports).

So . . . not everyone receives the email. However, just because you receive one, doesn’t necessarily mean you will be accepted. It is, however, a positive sign, but not a guarantee.

If you receive the email and you really want to attend UCLA and you want a little financial help, I can’t imagine why you wouldn’t apply. It’s like someone offering you a free lottery ticket.

I can’t get any of the links to work/find any more info about this… Can someone please explain the scholarship a little more? As part of my musical theater supplement I can send in an essay on why I should receive the alumni association arts scholarship

To qualify for the scholarship, do you have to be sent the email, or can you just use the website and still apply for it?

You can use the website and just apply. You don’t need the email.

I also received it!

Stats: 4.0 UW/4.568 W, 2200 SAT (single sitting), 32 ACT

However it seems that none of the links are working for me… and I just learned that they are down for maintenance. Joy.

I know someone who was actively involved in her local alumni committee doing the interviews and she said that the people they invite are the top applicants, many of whom they expect to lose to other top schools. So its a bit of a recruiting tool, in her view.

One thing they did (and probably still do) is give applicants a way to get questions about UCLA answered. It can be hard for a HS student to even figure out the right person to ask at a large U. I assume they still do this; they tell people invited to apply for the scholarship that if they have any questions about UCLA they are happy to find out the answer for them. So if you have questions about programs or processes at UCLA, whether AP credit will apply for your major, your name it, then if they still offer to serve as a liaison this is something worth taking advantage of.

I received the email as well. I have a 3.85 UW, yet my SAT and ACT scores are below average: 1840 and 27, respectively.

@mikemac

Are you saying they expect to lose the people that are receiving the email or they expect to lose the people they invite for the interview?

In other words, you’re referring to people who get the email or the interview?

My understanding, and keep in mind this is 2nd hand info, is that if they invite you to apply via the email then you’re on the list of people they’re trying to retain.

i got one too.

2290 sat

4.19 uc gpa at public school
good ecs but they also send it out to the top minority applicants as well
