$4-15k UCLA Alumni Scholarship

lovelines- Oops. I just realized that too. Haha. It's an alumni scholarship. Yeek. Thanks for correcting me :) I'm going to apply anyway...just because it's money ;)

HermioneTapper & lovelines:

Thanks for your insight :) Can you offer some more details on like the timing of the process? When you were informed you qualified, when you had your interview(s?), etc?

Also, the application's almost identical in content to the UC app right? So the main difference is teacher recs + new essays?

Furthermore, should it be okay if my teacher recs (2 teachers, 2 copies of each letter per teacher) are each folded within smaller envelopes, all included in the big envelope that I mail in?

Thank you so much in advance!

There are a few weekends that the website recommends that you keep free should you be called for an interview. I don't know them off the top of my head, but I'd check that out. After any given interview, you find out in 3 days or less. Most of mine...within a day.

Do you have the link to the application? I'm scared of giving you the wrong info, because I know some details were finickity.

What happens if one can not make it to the interview?
My D's schoool has a educational trip aborad planned for March 19-30.

click "Download the Application" to view the app :) Thanks!

hmm, i just got an e-mail and i'm wondering if it's the same as the one you guys got. i dont think it's based on academics, though

first paragraph:

" Throughout high school, you've been a hardworking leader in community
service and extracurricular activities. Now you have an opportunity to
reap the benefits of your labor. Apply for the 2008-09 Dr. Ralph J.
Bunche Alumni Scholarship. This scholarship recognizes and supports
students from historically underrepresented backgrounds who add to the
diversity of the UCLA community. "

it seems like an email for hispanics/blacks who pass some kind of preliminary academic standard

wait, so although UC is aware of race, do they incorporate it in their admissions process?

i'm oos/minority, and personally, i think at best i am borderline.

I know many of you guys got emails. But I got a postcard for the UCLA Alumni Scholarship thing not an email. Did any one else get a postcard from the mail? Does getting a postcard instead of an email actually mean anything?

I received the Alumni email first and then a Alumni postcard later. It might be the same thing. If not, what does your postcard say?

one of you guys said, the ppl who review the scholarship
apps are different from those of college admissions.
So, they wouldnt notice if i used the same essays
for both?

No, Race/ethnicity page is separated from the rest of the application. It CAN be used for scholarship purposes, but not for general university admittance.

IDK about the post-card, they probably just send it along with the email to make sure you get the notice, I doubt it's anything different.

college: I don't think they will care, they intentionally make the scholarship prompts similar so that you CAN use the same essay.

do you think they'd care if the essays are around 600 words instead of 500? ;)

I would try and keep it below 530.

...question for those who've received it before... so is the $4000-$15000 UCLA alumni scholarship a one time thing over four years? as in $1000-3750 per year?

That's what the app says!

Has anyone received a phone call reminding you to apply for this scholarship? If so, what does that mean? Why would they call you? Does it mean you are admitted?

I don't think it means you're admitted, but it definitely does imply that they care whether or not you apply for the scholarship. It's a good sign :)

Sometimes colleges call people if they think they may have had the wrong address, etc. For example, Michigan called me to ask if I got a welcome packet, and when I asked why they called, they said they had multiple addresses in the system. So that may be why.

I got a call tambien
