Okay I'm a sophomore right now in highschool.. I have a 4.2 weighted gpa and a 3.6 unweighted; this is my 1st semester gpa and I feel really depressed right now because I don't know how much it will impact in the near future when I'm going to apply colleges

My top college choices are :
Vanderbilt Univ., Georgetown Univ., Colgate Univ., Middlebury College .. obviously I can't say Harvard cuz that's just unrealistic since I have already failed my 1st semester of my goddam sophomore year

How bad do you think this gpa is? I'm trying SUPER HARD and I've dedicated myself to improve on the next semester aiming for a 4.5 or 4.4 :(

Please guys is this gpa really that bad? How much will it affect my college applications in the future? Would UCLA even accept this low gpa?

Honestly if you’re taken the hardest classes at your school, you should be fine. As long as it doesnt drop below a 3.5 UW or so.

First, lighten up on yourself or you will get yourself sick and depressed. My son is now a senior in college and we had a family party whenever he got a 3.0 for any given semester in High School. I got sick due to his grades but not him! He’s matured since then. He’s some advice from an old fart.

Look through the different forums/threads. You will find that “everyone” has a 4.4, 2300 SATs and volunteers many hours at the local hospital, Red Cross, etc. Even with that, the top colleges (including some you named) reject or waitlist seemingly “perfect students.”

You need to be “different” to really catch their eyes these days. Granted, not everyone can be the HS star quarterback, win the state science fair or whatever. Look around where you live and see what’s really going on. The trick is to find something that will set you apart and let you shine. Yes, improve your grades too.

Good Luck

Find some meaningful EC’s. Focus on maybe one or two that you’re really interested in, and try to get really involved and maybe get a leadership role. You’re just a sophomore; your list of top schools will inevitably change. One semester will not make or break you for any one school. Just relax, work your hardest, and everything will work out.
