5 Weeks til move-in day!

Wow-am I excited or nervous?? Oh yeah-BOTH!
S has a small conversation with roommates on who is bringing what but with such a small space, there is not a lot of room for what “they” feel is important.

I wrote out a list of other things that they might want to discuss before hand like top/bottom bunk, etc… We will see how this goes.

I am hoping this experience goes well for all of them. My S is an only child so to share his space with 3 others may be a bit challenging. But-on the other hand, it will be good for him! He has had some short term rooming experiences: Buckeye Boys State and Band Camp!

Wishing everyone else luck as they head into this adventure!!

NervousNellie I can’t believe how time has flown!
S is thrilled he received his first choice dorm and met many at orientation who will be in that dorm too. Orientation went very well. I was impressed at what a great job they did for such a huge school. S is looking forward to arriving on campus in mid-August for OWL.
Good luck to all of the newest Buckeyes! :)

I can’t wait as well! However, I’ve missed orientation the past two times because my flight keeps getting cancelled. Hopefully I can attend it soon and register for classes.

Good luck guys!

Move in day back in 2008 was truly an amazing experience…you think orientation is cool? Imagine everyone from every orientation moving in at the same time–they truly do an amazing job! Schools from all over the country actually come to learn how to do theirs!

OSULolz, thank you! We are all very lucky to have had you to help answer our burning questions (silly or not!) along the way. My S is in R-Lead and will then be an OWL, so we won’t get to see the actual move-in miracle process we have heard so much about! I may have to get S to record some of it on his iphone LOL :)

As we approach move in day, let us know if you have any last minute tips on items to bring or NOT bring…I am sure we will be making multiple trips to Target the day we arrive!

Helpful things:
(1) Command strips–great for hanging up posters without destroying the wall
[Amazon.com: Command 17203 Small and Medium Picture Hanging Strips, 4 Small 8 Medium Sets of Strips: Home Improvement](http://www.amazon.com/Command-17203-Medium-Picture-Hanging/dp/B000OF6X48)

(2) Crates: These are great for storage and there is always a place in the room to store
[Sterilite 16939006 File Crate, 6-Pack, Black: Amazon.com: Home Improvement](http://www.amazon.com/Sterilite-16939006-Crate-6-Pack-Black/dp/B002BDTEWE/ref=sr_1_2?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1342475360&sr=1-2&keywords=plastic+crates)

(3) Laptop cooling pad: If this is the first time you or your student has had a laptop, they can get hot. Using a cooling pad while they are on the desk can extend their life
[Amazon.com: Cooler Master NotePal X2 Laptop Cooling Pad with 140mm Blue LED Fan (R9-NBC-4WAK-GP): Electronics](http://www.amazon.com/Cooler-Master-NotePal-Cooling-R9-NBC-4WAK-GP/dp/B002MU1ZRS/ref=sr_1_cc_1?s=aps&ie=UTF8&qid=1342475416&sr=1-1-catcorr&keywords=laptop+cooling+pad)

(4) Things to use at the recreational facilities–lock for lockers, bathing suit, tennis rackets, etc. Many items can also be loaned out or purchased there

(5) Carpet! Makes the dorm feel MUCH more at home…especially because the floor can get gross, especially in the winter

(6) An entry rug for shoes in the winter. Stops the floor from getting soaked / muddy

(7) Food (water bottles, pop, snacks etc)–can be pretty expensive at places like CVS, Target near campus is an option too, but a bit far

(8) More than one clock (i.e. one for an alarm clock, one in the study area)

(9) Labels for binders / notebooks. Made my life soooo much more organized

(10) Closet…things. Not sure how to explain, but are really convenient. Hangs on the rod
http://www.walmart.com/ip/Whitmor-Hanging-Accessory-Shelves-Blue/11065081?findingMethod=rr

(11) FAN! Ohio State is very cheap with their air conditioning…not usually bad in the heat of summer, but gets stuffy around the edges of fall/spring

(12) Cables for TV / computer: HDMI, ethernet, audio, USB, coaxial, etc. Can be expensive unless you buy ahead of time online

(13) A few extension cords–always came in handy

(14) A switch (or a wired router, wireless routers are not allowed) if you have something like an xbox or internet-capable tv/bluray player. Rooms usually only have as many ethernet ports as residents.
[Amazon.com: TRENDnet 5-Port Unmanaged Gigabit GREENnet Switch (5 x 10/100/1000Mbps Auto-Negotiation, Auto-MDIX Gigabit Ethernet Ports) TEG-S50g (Black Metal): Electronics](http://www.amazon.com/TRENDnet-Unmanaged-GREENnet-Auto-Negotiation-Auto-MDIX/dp/B001QUA6R0/ref=sr_1_6?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1342476037&sr=1-6&keywords=5+port+switch)

(15) ear plugs or sleeping mask–I tried (unsuccessfully) to use a sleeping mask because I CANNOT sleep with any light at all…was a bit hard with 3 other roommates.

(16) Flash drive, at least 8GB
[Amazon.com: SanDisk Cruzer 8 GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive SDCZ36-008G-A11: Electronics](http://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-Cruzer-Flash-Drive-SDCZ36-008G-A11/dp/B001T9CTRS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1342476184&sr=8-1&keywords=8gb+flash+drive)

(17) flip flops / shower shoes

(18) surge protector, especially with expensive laptops, xbox/ps3, tv, time machines, etc.

Things to not bring…pretty basic: candles, hot plates, anything that cooks, fridge or air conditioner, too many family members (gets really crowded on move-in, although that does not apply to you, Nova), toilet paper, a lot of cash (use debit / buckid), big suitcases (have family drive it home when they leave), microwave (provided, along with fridge), desk, bed…

That’s all I can muster up to write. I just re-lived my college shopping experience

@OSULolz-
-too many family members (gets really crowded on move-in, although that does not apply to you, Nova)

***I’m sure you meant my name on there too. I don’t take up much space. :-)

-(14) A switch (or a wired router, wireless routers are not allowed) if you have something like an xbox or internet-capable tv/bluray player. Rooms usually only have as many ethernet ports as residents.

***My S is planning on bringing his PS3 so we should invest in something like this? (Just talked to my S. He uses our wireless at home for his PS3 now. We were understanding that OSU “is” wireless. Is it not in the dorm rooms?)

-(11) FAN! Ohio State is very cheap with their air conditioning…not usually bad in the heat of summer, but gets stuffy around the edges of fall/spring

***So do they get to control the AC in their own room or is it controlled by OSU?

***Can you go over the Resnet thing? Is this something they set up when they get to campus? Do they have to use it? I’m not excatly sure what it even is.

Thanks as always!

I am very excited for my daughter! ANd I have a question for OSUlolz:

She is in Morrison Tower in a triple and we are worried about space - how crowded will it be? Her and her roommates have been coordinating who is getting what and that has helped a lot. She is assigned to bring the printer - but where will it go? I looks like every little bit of space is accounted for and I don’t want it taking over too much space on her desk.

Can’t wait to move in. I’m partcipating in the R-LEAD program, which means I have to move in on the 13th of August. Time is flying by too fast.

@NervousNellie1

(14) Yes, OSU dorms are completely wireless. However, my xbox (was an older version) did not have wireless, combined with my roommates internet-ready bluray player meant we had to have a switch. I also much preferred to be plugged into wired internet because it was a bit faster–may matter even more for something like PS3 online gaming or netflix. I would definitely try it out wireless first though, then order online if need be

(11) The students will have zero control over their air conditioning. I believe the rule was that it had to be constantly over 70-75 degrees (or something like that) before a/c would be turned on. However, if it went below at night, they would keep it off. For us it mattered the most during hot fall days and hot spring days…once the full-blown heat arrives, it will stay on for good. One year though, our A/C broke for a week. Let’s just say it was not the happiest of finals weeks.

Resnet is just the name for Ohio State’s internet (wired and wireless), found all over campus (dorms, lecture halls, classrooms, etc). The student logs in with the same Name.# as carmen and uses the same password as well. Here are some instructions for connecting to wired/wireless, along with some rules/regulations
