Unlike when my DD did Alabama Action several years ago it is highly unlikely that I will receive much (if any) communication from my DS this time around.

Please share any info that you might get for those of us who might not get any!

Like Peachtide and NYBama – my freshman DS (who is doing AA) is unlikely to provide much in the way of updates. But it was encouraging to get a text last night that he is “…having a really good time and meeting a lot of cool people so far”. It’s rare for him to sound so excited (note the use of the adverb “really”!) about anything.

Hearing this eases the sting of not having him home anymore.

ThorEric…that would be a really long text from my son. Fortunately his sister has texted me several times and assured me that the times she has seen her brother he has been having a great time!

Received a brief text that son is enjoying AA. Said he was painting at an elementary school. Eating a buffet at Dreamland on the first evening didn’t hurt his impression of the program!

This is from the Post #3 (above), added as an Editor’s Note:

“A media day for Alabama Action is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 15, at Brookwood Elementary School, 16049 Alabama Highway 216 in Brookwood. Students will work outdoors and indoors on service projects. … The media day for Outdoor Action will be from 8:30 a.m. to noon, Thursday, Aug. 15, at Hurricane Creek.”

I expect that there will be pics posted Thursday and many of our CC students will be in them. UA Honors College FB will also post some, I’m sure. It was fun last year picking out our students, as this was the only “contact” some of had had with them since dropping them off.

Got 2 pictures of a scavenger hunt by text and got word there is a picnic tonight. While we have not had a real conversation, there were lots of big smiles in the picture. Looks like they are having a blast! What little I get in news, I will share :)

DS texted me last night and said his group is building a baseball field at an elementary school. Another friend heard that her DD is painting bathrooms at the same school.

After some initial moaning and groaning on Sunday night ( oh we have to get up so early…) son told me today he is so glad to have participated, really loved the whole experience, met some great people! Perfect start to college life.

Just had a nice conversation with DS. His group finished the baseball field with 4 minutes to spare today. Apparently on Monday, the dump truck dumped the dirt at the bottom of the hill instead of the top and they had to move a lot of dirt. He sounded very tired, but really enjoyed the week. They will have a banquet tonight at the stadium.

The report from my DS that a tractor trailer arrived in the morning and dropped off mulch (that’s a lot of mulch!). They then shoveled it onto the playground at Cottondale ES - which took the entire week. What a great way to get a workout! :-)
