I, from what I've heard, I guess it's true. They picked WAY too many people for EA and have to narrow down the list to a reasonable amount (1/3 the total class, rt?).

What number are you guys aiming for?

I believe that quote is a bit out of context. Matt would never say anything like that so flippantly. He's as disappointed as I am about the folks we can't take.

To answer spartan's question - you have it right, we can't admit more than 1/3 of the class during EA. This doesn't mean that we won't pick many of the EA's up during RA.

it's most likely a joke, but still, the number of applicants that will be deferred/rejected implied by that dialogue, is going to be big.

That's obvious from the statistics anyway, without bringing up any alleged private conversations.

Well. If their aim is a class of 980. They have a 59% yield rate.
Therefore, they should admit 1661 kids.

1/3 of that is 554. Unless, of course, they assume higher yield for EAs, and then lower the number accordingly. If we say they will admit 460 EA, and 309x applied, that means that 2638 will be rejected or deferred. That is a big number.

i want to stop thinking about this and more than anything stop visiting this forum. but i cant :(

Not till next week, at least.

i need to buy a new audio card for my computer =[

I just need a new computer, but i'm not complaining.

Maybe, if I get into MIT, I can use that as leverage with my parents to get one?....I don't know how that would work, considering the $$$ they'd have to spend on MIT, but maybe?

if you get into MIT you could probably find the parts you need on reuse.

i have 3 comps. i dont thik i need another one

Spartan Pho3nix, last year's yield was 67%, not 59%, the highest ever for MIT, and the incoming class was once again oversubscribed (about 1050 students). Check out the details on applicants, acceptances, etc. for the Class of 2009 on an archived entry from Matt McGann's blog.

Matt also reported 2,822 EA applications last year, and although I can't locate a first source, the number 383 sticks in my head for number of EA admits last year, along with 50 denials, all others moving to the regular round.

(For those who are not familiar with the terms, "yield" refers to the percentage of students offered admission who accept that offer.)

According to colllege board,

* Number of early action applications received: 2,833
* Number admitted under early action plan: 438
* Number enrolled under early action plan: 340

Durran, I am certain there were fewer than 400 accepted EA applicants last year. I found stats on another site (ivysuccess) also, and they differ yet again (although they also list 380 EA admits). If I have to bet on one of the three, I am putting my money on the MIT admissions office.

As the numbers change so much year-to-year, it's enough to say that last year's admissions were highly competitive, and Matt has already said on his blog that this year's admissions are also going to be "very tough" (in his words).

=( Sad sad...

Oh my god. I just had a dream where I recieved a large envelope from MIT.

Inside was a t-shirt (i need to get that idea out of my head), and a small envelope...which contained the forms I needed to apply.

I was like "OMG *** THIS IS A DREAM" then I got mad and woke up cause my Alarm was ringing.

I can't believe what I just did!!!

I took my mind off the college matters and actually went to ign.com to watch some Prince Of Persia 3 actions!!!

lol

and i just had a dream of going to prom with my secret crush while at a marriage/church service. this is starting to take an emotional toll... :)

Maybe a month ago, I had a dream about getting deferred. For some reason, I saw my dad waving a small envelope, so I knew that I was getting deferred. Then I opened it, and I pulled out maybe eight sheets of paper. The first page said I was deferred. The other sheets were lined and had my essay on them (the ruling was very wide, and the words were far apart), apparently handwritten. This was weird because I sent my application material online. Then I looked at the front sheet again, and then I realized that it was bogus because it had comments about my essay, and the prompt it listed was different from the ones available on the application.

I also dreamed of getting a big envelope, maybe 2 weeks ago. I was really disappointed when I woke up.

I haven't had any further dreams. I suppose I'll have some the night before I get the notification. The night before the AMC last year, I had maybe 5 dreams about failing. Fortunately, I got 132.5.

u guys have weird dreams. i never dream about getting the letter.

i always dream about my computer blowing up though
