about the tisch film portfolio

If you do a short film, does it have to be an original script or can it be an adaptation of something? I can't find any info on this on the site so any help is much appreciated!

I would suggest that you call Kanbar (212 998 1700) for a definitive answer. My guess is that, although an adaptation may be allowed, it would be a better idea to show your creativity with an original idea. It's a ten minute (max.) film so that shouldn't be too difficult for a prospective filmmaker to accomplish. I know that they specify that you cannot submit a video of a staged theatre performance, and also that the applicant must be the principal creative force of the submitted work.

As long as it is something that you think they haven't seen all that much before. Just tell a great story and it will be fine.

Yeah, all Tisch Film looks for is your ability to tell a story. An original script would be the better idea.

If you want to be a Tisch Scholar or something, you have to submit a film to be considered I believe. They don't say that, but every Tisch scholar I've heard of submitted a film. My friend who had a 1500+ SAT score but submitted a script was not asked to be a Tisch Scholar.

If it helps at all, I was thinking of doing a condensed version of Oscar Wilde's Salome in... modern-ish dress. I didn't think it would be all that common an approach but I could be mistaken.

I thought it was probably safest to do an original idea, and it shouldn't be too hard to come up with one, so thanks for all the help already!

I never heard of that but, it is always good to stand out...lol

kokakola,

I would recommend against your Salome idea. There is a musical, which was very popular in NYC, called A Man of No Importance which includes a similar idea. Chances are good that one of the individuals at Tisch who will be reviewing artistic portfolios will have seen that show. Best of luck coming up with a more original idea. :)

Wow, I never knew about the whole submit a film to be a scholar. I thought I would be considered for that, but I submitted a script...

Yeah I know, sucks right? It's just a theory of mine really, but so far it hasn't been proven wrong lol

Ahaha... thank you, then, I guess.
