Academic Renewal Problem. Will affect my transfer chance to USC and UCI.

Hey everyone,

A little background of myself, from year 2003-2010 (I know, it's a long time), I didn't care about school or my future while I was living in Fresno and received many Fs. In 2011, I moved to SoCal, did some soul searching and everything clicked. I started doing really well in school in order to pursue a better future for myself. I currently have a 3.95GPA at cypress college. I've repeated and did AR for all the classes I've received Fs on at Fresno City College except for 1. This particular Biology class, Biology 3, is not offered at any colleges around my area so I am unable to retake it. I've taken another biology class that satisfies IGETC and tried to request a course alleviation for Biology 3 at Fresno City College. I've attempted it twice now and both time they denied me with the reason being "Student not pursing degree of certificate @ Fresno City College". My overall GPA is currently sitting at 3.55, it would be at a 3.75 if this Biology 3 class can be removed from my GPA calculation. I am trying to apply to USC and UCI and really need the 3.7 GPA in order to have a really good shot.

Does anyone know if there's anything I can do to make this Biology 3 alleviation happen? Is there someone higher up in authority perhaps I can send a request to? Also, in case there's no way of me getting rid of the Biology 3 class, with a 3.55-3.6GPA, what are the chances of me getting accepted into Marshall School of Business? For the past years, my GPA has been at 4.0 and I am very confident I will receive another 4.0 during the 2015 spring semester.

Your help is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for any input you may have.

I don’t really have an answer to your question, but I wanted to let u know that USC doesn’t accept Academic Renewal for retaken classes. They will factor in the new grades with the old ones, so for USC, your GPA will be significantly lower than for the UCs. I’m not saying you won’t/ can’t get in, but I thought you should be aware.

Pretty much you’re set for all the UCs, but for any private school you don’t have much of a chance. I have also gotten AR. When I was transferring, I talked to many private schools and they all said they don’t accept AR. It’s not the end of the world though, because the UCs are great.

Question.

Is USC the only private school that factors in both old and new grades?

Do schools like Pepperdine, LMU, and Chapman do that as well?

Most private schools do not acknowledge AR. Some privates will sometimes allow you to discount grades from 7+ years ago, but that’s at their discretion. But that’s usually an all or nothing deal. Meaning if I have 6 classes from 10 years ago, and I got 3 Fs and 3 A’s, I either have to keep all 6 grades and their units, or get rid of all 6.

Thanks for the response everyone! When I attended an USC transfer counseling session, they told me that USC primarily focuses on the student’s academic achievement for the year before admission. Since the F’s I’ve received are all from 3+ years ago, I might have a chance of getting in. Either way, I will be crossing my fingers and toes for the best.

Hi, I came to your page when I was doing a research for the same question you had. I am also doing AR in Mt. Sac, near by Cypress College, and I also want to try applying to USC, but have the same concerns like you did. I got 5 F in the past, and retaking them. So, did you get into USC? How was the AR affected you applying to private school ?

If you can share your experience with me, that will be very helpful !

Thank you !

USC does not recognize AR. From what I remember, if you repeat a course, they average the 2 grades. If you do not retake a failed course and use AR to remove grades, despite your CCC no longer counting them in your GPA, USC will count it. Most private schools don’t recognize AR.
