Hey guys, I'm new around these parts.

I am currently at a CC and I have a UC GPA of 3.65 (This will be raising soon). I have a majority of A's on my transcript, then some classes I dropped the ball and got B's, in Biology, Anatomy, and a math class. I have trouble in math and in an attempt to take precalc during High School at my local CC( that I go to now) I ended up getting a D (3 years ago) :(, and in an attempt to take it again (Spring 2011) I ended up taking a W because I saw no good grade coming from that class. With that said, I want to try to get an academic renewal for that D because I want to raise my GPA as well as I need those 4 units so I can take another class. Do you think I would be able to get one, just for that one D? Do you know how hard it is to get an academic renewal? I calculated I would have a 3.78 GPA, without the D.

It depends on which CC you’re at because different schools have different criteria for academic renewals. For example, my old CC had the following rules:

Students who have a 2.5 grade point average (GPA) in their last fifteen (15) units, or a 2.0 GPA in their last thirty (30) units completed at an accredited college or university, may petition to have up to eighteen (18) units of “D” or “F” grades removed from cumulative GPA consideration, provided such coursework was completed two years prior to the effective date of the petition. Graduation honors and awards are based on the full cumulative GPA. Academic renewal is irreversible.

So in your case it seems like you have a high enough GPA but need to wait at least two full years to appeal for an academic renewal… But then again, each school is different so make sure you go see an adviser. Hope this helps.

Can you meet with a cc counselor? Someone should be able to help you do this at your cc if it’s within their policies to remove a DE “D” from transcript.
