its a big yellow envelope

i got waitlisted, i called to ask a few questions about the waitlisted process, and of course i get the rudest admissions councelor. Completely turned me off to marquette and i cancelled my application right then. I’m headed elsewhere. Good luck to all who are still waiting and congrats to all accepted.

Sorry to hear that pacman54. I’ve never had a bad interaction with the admissions office. S was wait listed a few years ago and D is waitlisted right now for nursing. The staff has been helpful in the next steps in the process. S eventually was accepted, we’re hopeful D will be too. As both us parents are legacy it can be hard to disassociate the emotional/visceral with the logical/practical. Certainly this was not the decision we had hoped for but we understand how competitive Marquette can be for admission. It;s just hard to work through good students who are on the list.

Best advice to anyone on the waitlist (I’ll share what I learned from talking to the staff and my experiences):
- Remember, you’re on the list because you have the potential to be a great student at Marquette. If D is a indication (3.85 gpa, 27 ACT), there are not pure academic reasons for the wait list; sometimes, there is just not enough room and good students find themseleves on the list.
- Send additional information. This probably helped my son get moved off the list and we’re hopeful again for D. The frequently asked questions sheet (which by the way is better than many others my son received) mailed to my daughter was pretty helpful.
- Don’t panic. D was admitted to some other schools but really wants MU.
- Don’t forget the scholarship applications and financial aid filing. S received a scholarship he applied for while on the list. Great for our financial picture.

To the admitted students, congratulations! To those of us still waiting, hang in there!

Aspenpine,

We were told that there were 1900 applications for the 85 spots in the nursing program. It’s a shame that the Marquette doesn’t have the capacity to accept all of the exceptionally qualified students, especially given the overwhelming demand for nurses in the marketplace. I know they are working on expanding the program, but I hear there is also a shortage of nursing educators (and money).

If it is convenient for you, I recommend that your D attend the scholarship competition. A year or two ago, someone on the Nursing waiting list actually won a scholarship, and they immediately accepted her. The nursing scholarship test is an essay and a group exercise, so she wouldn’t even have to be the best standardized-test-taker in the group in order to win one.

aspenpine how long did your S wait until off WaitList? Did you find out before/after may 1st?

Haven’t seen the letter yet, but I got the congrats email. For those of you going to Marquette… why? I only applied because I got there “fast, no application fee” application. I won’t be able to visit, but I would like some information!

What program / major are you interested in? I might be of some help. Eng. '83 and have a son who is a Freshman. By the way where are you in Iowa, I have another son at ISU.

Pre-med… I’m in southwest Iowa.

The Biomed programs at Marquette are very well reguarded. They are very tough but you would go into medschool very well prepared. Let me know if you are interested in other programs or have any other questions. Also consider that Marquette is right in downtown Milwaukee so you have to be willing to live in med-large city.

S received the admission decision a few days before May 1. I’m pretty certain that if he heard after May 1 he still would have decided on Marquette.

For those accepted, what’s your GPA and ACT or SAT score?
And what other schools did you apply to?

S’s ACT 34, GPA 3.98
Accepted at: Univ. Chicago, UW-Madison, Lawrence, St. Norbert, St. John’s in MN, Creighton in Nebraska. Waiting to hear from Washington Univ. in St. Louis, Grinnell in Iowa and Hillsdale in Michigan.

ACT 31, weighted GPA 3.5.
Accepted at Univ Iowa. Declined by UW Madison

UW Gpa: 3.96 Act: 28
Accepted: Uni of Minnesota - twin cities (waitlisted at CBS), truman state, drake, central
Waiting: Wake Forest, WashU, Vandy, U of R.

newsdrms – how/when do you apply for the biomed programs?

I didn’t receive my letter yet, but I did get the congratulations Email :)

ShAy did u apply to umn ED?

No. I was sent the “gopher fast application.” To be honest, that’s the only reason I applied. I didn’t realize that umn wasn’t just “another state university.” But, my intended major was biomedical sciences so they put me in for their college of biological sciences school – but I was waitlisted.

SHAY_888 if you are just going into Biomedical you would be under the health sciences department. If you want Biomedical Engineering you would have to get in the engineering department. Once you decide to attend you can start talking to your advisor through the checkmarq site. For more info on these go to Marquette site under major & programs then undergraduates majors/minors. Hope this helps!

Okay, thank you! And, actually I would pursue a major in exercise science.
