Applied early August but didn’t realize he needed his senior schedule sent in until late November… He had gotton the provisional letter though. He didn’t finish his honors app until the day before it was due… But they only let in 250 so it’s a long shot anyway.

bltmk - he has a 34 ACT but is just outside in the top 10%.

Just finished my honors app today. Submitted my regular app mid november.

I got the provisional acceptance letter so hoping to hear back soon!

Clemson’s my number 1!

Good morning everyone.
FYI – My DD2 just received her Acceptance and Scholarship letter yesterday via Snail Mail. Scholarship was for $10K annually… ACT 31, SAT 2040 (I think) and 3.99 UW GPA. We are OOS and this is our DD2’s #1 choice. Hope this helps others that are waiting.

Wish all of you the best of luck and Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays.

When did she apply?

Congrats though!

My DD was sent a “provisional acceptance” letter after her 33 ACT score was received last spring - we visited the campus over spring break. She applied months ago and hasn’t heard anything from Clemson - although she did receive a postcard holiday greeting.

Her school, as well as almost all competative public high schools in suburban Chicago, refuse to provide class rank. I’m guessing that is the hangup since other posts indicate rank appears to be a fixation at Clemson.

I have no doubt she will eventually be admitted; however, it looks like it probably doesn’t matter at this point. In the past couple weeks she has been admitted EA to Notre Dame, received a full-tuition scholarship to Alabama, been admitted to South Carolina (scholarship still to be determined-was invited to McNair presentation in Chicago) and admitted to Miami (Ohio) with at least a 1/2 tuition up to full tuition scholarship (exact amount to be determined in March).

While each school can handle admissions any way they want to, in this day and age, admissions is not in a vacuum - especially with tools such as CC! I think Clemson needs to show a little flexability on the rank issue, otherwise it risks alienating some very desirable students.

@ChicagoBear, Clemson doesn’t require class ranking – my son’s HS doesn’t rank either – so I don’t believe that’s the issue. If the school provides any grade distribution information, they will look at that. They also look at test scores, but of course I can’t tell you how important those are.

well here’s how I understand the whole “class rank” deal with respect to Clemson admissions. Clemson’s president James Barker has made it no secret that he wants Clemson to move up in the US News & World Report rankings. One of the criteria used in the rankings formula is the “% of HS students in the Top 10% of their class” - that’s probably a major reason why the 10% mark is set to get a scholarship, so they can attract more students in that category. It’s pretty unfortunate I know because I went to a very competitive high school in the Boston area and was not in the top 10% of my high school class (even though I’m pretty sure I would be somewhere else) but that’s just how Clemson views it (I’m guessing).

If class rank isn’t provided by the high school, Clemson will look at the GPA and try and determine what they would be ranked at a typical school.

I checked the school profile that is sent with each transcript and absolutely no grade distributions or grade averages are included on the profile. The distribution of ACT scores is included and 4.6% of the class scored in the 33-36 range. I checked Naviance at her school and found out that this is the first year anyone has applied to Clemson in the past five years - so they have no real basis for comparison. I can only guess (but still don’t understand why) this might account for their hesitation to send an “extra early” acceptance. I know an EA answer isn’t officially due from Clemson until mid February.

Before she applied I called admissions to ask how they would handle the “no class rank” and they basically said they would estimate it on available data. Since none of the data they have would indicate anything lower than 4.6%.

just be patient, if your DD got into Notre Dame, I’m sure her grades/transcript look fantastic - couple that with the ACT score of 33 and you’ll have a pretty strong resume for the admissions office to look at. These early admissions letters continue through January so don’t get too discouraged yet.

Best of luck!

Umm. You can get a scholarship and not be in the top 10%. My OOS son was accepted with a (34 ACT,3.895 unw, 8 AP’s) and got the $10,000/year scholarship. He is outside the 10% at a competitive high school. I don’t think the class rank affects getting a scholarship however I do think it may have an affect on how much of a scholarship you get.

nobody said anything about having to be in the top 10% to get a scholarship - just mentioned that if your class rank isn’t provided to Clemson, they’ll evaluate your GPA instead.

<a href=“Office of Student Financial Aid | Clemson University”>Office of Student Financial Aid | Clemson University;
(basically reiterates everything that I’ve said, including the note at the very bottom)

Right here:

Non-Resident Merit Scholarship
Domestic out-of-state students with at least a 1250 SAT (CR+M) or 28 ACT and who are ranked in the top 10%* of their
high school class will receive a merit scholarship of at least $5000 annually. Students with higher test scores will be
considered for these merit scholarships up to $15,000 annually.

It definitely says top 10%.

And I met with the head of academic recruiting for undergrads, and he mentioned a time a person was ranked at the 10.6% mark and they couldn’t give it to her. So if you are ranked, I’m pretty sure you do have to be.

Has anyone who has applied in November gotten an acceptance letter yet? If so, when did you apply?

I’m eagerly waiting for mine, starting to worry a bit though…

My son applied Dec. 1 and received his acceptance Christmas Eve day. A great present! We are in state.

Very jealous. I applied the 17th of November and still haven’t heard back… Great present though!

Hang in there and good luck. I know it is tough to wait.

Tigerin - My son’s transcript clearly shows that he is outside the top 10%. However his school ranks on the non-wieghted gpa. Anyway he was awarded a scholarship earlier this month so I think it really depends on the classes you have taken on whether or not they will give one. BTW he’s a white male with no hooks.

All I am trying to say is if your kid is outside the 10% and has taken gifted, Ap classes and they have a good GPA/SAT/ACT they can over look the top 10% treshold.

I think that if admission is what you’re concerned about, it’s not yet time to be concerned. However, merit aid awards seem to have been going out since late Nov or early Dec.

I believe I read on the Clemson website that applicants with high GPAs and high SATs are notified early if they’re receiving merit scholarship awards, otherwise notification is in Feb.

In regards to class rank, it isn’t a requirement because I got $10,000/year and I’m barely in the top 20% of my class. My GPA isn’t great either, I have a 3.3.

well I feel ripped off now that I didn’t get a scholarship haha, just kidding but I guess then if you want to be sure that you’re going to get a scholarship, meet the requirements they have posted online - if not, well apply and maybe you’ll get lucky!

And yes if you are concerned about getting admission to Clemson, don’t be. I didn’t get my letter till February 14th along with the majority of other early applicants.

Did you also qualify for the scholarship?

I know letters are still being sent out into early Jan. and I did apply late.

But I do definitely qualify for the scholarship with a 34 ACT and top 4 or 5 in the class.

So I just hope to be in on the last batch perhaps…

Also, interesting to hear about the 10% mark, I suppose I was told information that was maybe the rules, but they may be overlooked or something.
